Hey, it's like my first post or something....
Been lurking for sometime and really dig the forum, so I thought I would register and throw this one out to y'all:
I'm looking for a Boss distortion that will give me a fairly driven tone with a very defined "ahhh" sound. Sort of like a throaty, almost[/i] cocked wah type of sound except a lot more subtle and balanced. I've read that the DS-2 in Turbo mode has a big midrange push, and that may be what I'm looking for. I want to be able to get this sound (or something very like it) without using something like a GE-7 or anything like that.
Am I barking up the right tree? FWIW, I'm using mostly Teles and Strats.
Gracias! |

| hello there. you may be right there about the ds-2. i sold a ds-2 about 5 years ago and remember that the turbo mode 2 adds midrange to the distorted sound. i sold mine coz i could not set the gain at the same amount. turbo mode 1 seemed to be distortion while mode 2 seemed to be overdrive with more mids. i wanted it to have the same amount of gain when i switch between modes using an fs-5 footswtich. the mt-2 seems to have a mid control but i haven't checked one yet. try both at a store. goodluck on your search. peace, len! |

I might be wrong but my impression is that none of the dist pedals has a mid range boost as large as the OD-1 and OD-2. I recommend trying one of those. Maybe in combination with a dist pedal. |

| well the XT-2 xtortion lies half way in between a distortion pedal and a stationary wah. you can use the knobs to cycle thru the range a bit too. |

the DS-2 is known for having a mid range boost but i dont notice it to have any more midrange than any other pedal. i would say it is THE best pedal for getting you a regular straight up "rock" distortion in my books. as controlfreak said, if its a cocked wah sound youre going for check into the XT-2. on its own, the XT-2 might be a little too crazy but if you use it subtly and mix it with an OD you might enjoy the results. |

| Hopefully I should have an MIJ DS-2 in the next couple of days; I'll let you know what I think. |

This pedal has mid boost stage, of course, but it is accomplished mainly before the clipping stage. The sound is not corrected back afterwards (as in MT-2 example) by a built in eq that would be the reason why its sound likely mid-boost-ranged. However, DS-2 has a quite specific sound but it is one of my favorite distortion ever.

| Cool guys, thanks for the tips. I'll have to give it and some other pedals a test drive and see what if I can coax a little bit of that "ahhh" sound out that I'm looking for. For whatever reason, my instincts tell me that the DS-2 will get me there. |

Received my MIJ DS-2 today. Definitly seems like a bit of a parametric eq effect (like a cocked wah) in Turbo mode.
I think I like this pedal, but I may still prefer the DS-1. The DS-1 is a little "grainier", but sound better for chords. The DS-2 is a little smoother and thicker on the high notes. Not sure. Have it give it more time to get used to. |

I also had a DS-2 arrive today and I'm totally with alex_law - definitely a 'cocked-wah' sound there in Turbo mode.
Welcome to the forum too! |

Actually, this is a really good description of what I'm aiming for with the DS-2, so this helps a lot...thanks! |

| Hey, this DS-2 sounds great with single coils! Can't say that about most distortion pedals. I still think it's not quite as "open" sounding as a DS-1, but it's a very usable tone. |
