Hi Guys! just got a quick question about the above volume pedals.
im looking at getting a volume pedal and the FV-500 is the one im going for, one thing i haven't really worked out yet, is whether to get the High or Low impedance pedal.
I'll definitly be using the pedal BEFORE any of my pedals, the set up will be:
Guitar -> FV-500 -> TU-2 -> Effects Pedals -> Amp.
The roland and boss sites give 3 general rules to help decide which level of impedance to get:
1. If you wish to use an effect or the TU-2 before the volume pedal, choose the FV-500L (low impedance input model) Foot Volume.
2. If you wish to use an effect or the TU-2 after the volume pedal, choose the FV-500H (high impedance input model) Foot Volume.
3. If you wish to connect a guitar with active pickups or a built-in preamp directly to the volume pedal, choose the FV-500L (low impedance input model) Foot Volume.
Now rule number 1 we count out because the volume pedal is going BEFORE the effects chain, so this suggests i get the FV-500H. Rule number 2 confimrs this, the FV-500H is the way to go it seems. But for me rule number 3 then poses a problem as the guitar i'll predominantly be using has got active pickups in it. So then im thinking i should be getting the FV-500L. But if i get the FV-500L as i have active pickups in the guitar and plug it in BEFORE the effects chain thats going to go against Rolands first piece of advice. The other thing is, i will from time to time be using a guitar with passive pickups in it.
If i plug a guitar with passive pickups into the FV-500L BEFORE the effects chain im guessing this is going to cause big problems?
If im plugging my guitar with active pickups into an FV-500H pedal what are going to be the issues here?

Their respective manuals didn't refer to the I/O impedances so I'd say get the low-impedance model to match the output of your active pickups for most of your playing. When you use your passive pickup guitar, the impedances won't match & you may get slight loading on your pickups. However, there simply will not be "big problems". You may experience some tone degradation & lack of clarity but it certainly won't damage your guitar or anything down the line.
I read somewhere that if you need versatility in the position of your volume pedal, get the low-impedance model. You can run it ahead or behind effects with active or passive guitars & lose less tone. Finally, to address the scenario where you buy the 500H & run your active through it, I think you output may be muted but am not sure.
Someone correct me if I'm not entirely accurate but I did a fair amount of research into this very dilemma when I bought my FV-500H. Since my pedalboard is cramped & was difficult to move even a volume connector in & out, I relegated myself to using it strictly as a vol/exp before my wah & running the tuner off of it for accuracy. I did want the stereo capability of the 500L for the same price but decided against it. In any case, the 500 series is a fuggin' tank & I think I made the right choice. Good luck! |

| heya. thanks for that. after doing a bit more reading and thinking im pretty much decided on getting the Low Impedance one. i'm thinking i'll prob plug my guitar straight into my effects chain, then into the pedal last, but have the actual physical position of the volume pedal before all of the effects pedals so that way i sort of get a win/win situation.
