Do you get most of your pedals from Ebay these days? If you do, do you mainly buy in your own country or buy from anywhere around the globe?
Do you like the idea of "getting to know who you are buying from"?
I used to check out shops, and still do. Buying from shops is different than buying from Ebay, in the sense that you may know the shop, what they stand for and the whole feel of the shop. You may like the idea of doing deals when you buy a few items, getting things a little cheaper than what the pricetag says etc.
In shops you may have a change to listen to a pedal, get your hands on it, try a few settings out, try it even out with your own gtr. ect. It makes all the difference hearing a pedal through your own gear so you really get a feel for it.
Going into town with the idea to score some new gear is a really fun experience, try that with Ebay, where it seems to be like just another day of drooling over pictures.............
Ebay only gives you pictures and a change to ask the seller some questions,.............on other hand, internet is a quick tool to educate yourself about a new item that you did not know before, so........
Sofar I have only bought pedals here in the UK, have searched in other countries, do like the prices, but you have to add the shipping on top of the bidding price, so really...........
So let us hear some of your buying experiences, your likes, dislikes ect.
Oh perhaps this one should have been placed in another forum, was not too sure where and since we are dealing with shopping for Boss pedals I thought..........let us stick in the place where we do all the talking about those little shiny boxes |

I shop ebay sometimes but I'd rather find my goods in music stores. The thing I like about ebay is that you can find vintage stuff, items you can't find in most stores, but there are many things I hate about ebay, like when everybody and there little brother starts bidding on an item you were hoping to score, or when someone says a item is MINT but when you get it it is near mint or far from, and sometimes people sell you broken stuff (it's happend to me (PN-2) ), and of course sometimes poeple will take your money and never send you anthing or the DUMB EBAYER who dosen't know what he's doing, or the ebayer who takes a month to send you your item. Sometimes things get lost in the mail to, then you get to cool ebayers pissed off at eachother.
My advice is to go to a music store every now and then. It's much better to know what your getting. |

| I usually buy my effects at used music shops, pawn shops, and guitar center. I have never bought anything off of ebay yet because I don't have a checking account yet. and it's just too much of a hassle bidding on pedals when I know someone out there has way more money than i do at the moment. Plus I can't test the pedal to see how it sounds (what if it works, but after a month breaks down.) At shops I can hagel over price, and chat with the clerks. Also at shops I can try out pedals with other gear than what I have to get a bigger idea of what a pedal can do. |

I'd prefer buying locally and in person, but as far as used Boss effects go, the selection around here tends to be rather limited and overpriced for my frugal self. eBay (and other online places in general -- instrumentexchange.com and gbase.com are also worth a look) is much better in my opinion; the selection at any given time will invariably feature dozens of pedals that aren't available locally, and if you're patient, eventually you will find what you want at a reasonable price. (that said, the "reasonable price" bit no longer applies *anywhere* to pedals like the SP-1, SG-1, VB-2, etc.)
anyway, I've bought Boss pedals (and guitars, and amplifiers) from eBay USA, UK, and Canada so far. I always factor the cost of shipping into my decision whether to bid or not, which excludes most overseas auctions, but most online transactions don't require sales tax so there are some savings from buying online. sure, there's an element of risk (what if the seller flakes out after you pay, etc.), and delayed gratification is no fun either, but (knock on wood) I've never been burned on a Boss product. |

| here in the philippines. we usually buy boss pedals from other end users. it's much cheaper compared to buying new ones. you can get the same pedal in the same condition sometimes less than half the original price. and ofcourse, you can test the pedal before you buy them. another bonus is we get to meet other musicians and be friends with them. unfortunately, i haven't had a chance to buy pedals via ebay. i'm always being outbid by another buyer. |

| I buy 95% of pedals through Ebay. Very rarely do I find anything interesting in any shops but sometimes I find something in the classifieds. |

In addition to what maniacally_cool said, Most of my pedals are from musicians that ended their band. They get tired of having those small boxes and sell them at a very low price (sometimes give them away). I met maniacally_cool in this manner when he sold me an MT-2 and SD-2. I sometimes ask relatives and friends that go abroad to grab me some boxes. |

Great to hear about your own stories guys,
I like the idea of what Maniacally_Cool mentioned of meeting the ohter musicians when you buy some pedals of them. A little like the old days where people learn songs from each other, pick up some riffs and ideas ect. Seems that the world works in a different way these days, and has been for a while. People tend to use videos, dvd's and internet for their learning sources. Of course people still jam together, but things are different....................
Seems that most of us like the idea of listening first to a pedal before we buy one, also seems that we tend to favour the music shop over Ebay [or internet].
As Bossarea mentioned: Most of the interesting pedals are no longer in the shops. Or not here where I live, and the shopowners say the same thing: The cool stuff these days is on internet and Ebay with the result of prices going up, people reading more and more about vingtage gear [Heh why are we on this very Website???!!]and educating themselves about the gear in general.
The whole Ebay thing has cause for some vintage shops around here to no longer sell Boss products, they believe they are too regular, and most people buy of Ebay now, so they prefer to go for more unusual stuff.
In the past I have bought things from this shop, been guilty of paying way too much, thinking "Well you will not see this often around" which is wrong because you do find certain things, but you need to give it time.
On my first Ebay day, I saw a VB-2, a DM-2 a CE-1 [okay not a compact one, but still believed to be fairly "rare" ] I have not seen these things in shops before, so my me feel like "Nice that stuff can be found here, but you need to be willing to pay" Bidded on the VB-2 but when I saw where the price went I felt like: "What are these people insane"? "These guys cannot be players as this is way too much"
Well with the more unusual ones prices can go up, but you can still be lucky, just remain patient. Think I was lucky with the CE-1, as they usually go for a lot more, but then I feel I have paid too much for the AW-2 and the FZ-2, been lucky with the FZ-3 and the TW-1.
NOw with having Ebay around does anyone still buy new Boss pedals? Tried the AW-3 last week, just to experience that "vowel sound", the newprice for them made me smile and angry at the same time, "How do they dare?" But then the odd thing is, when you see how much they go for on Ebay that is even more insane, not all that much less of the shopprice.............................
all in all Bosspedals remain fairly high in their price, and in the past it was not all that different, no, they never have been really cheap.............. |

well some new players (kids, mostly) tend to buy brand new pedals because they have no idea of the 2nd hand items being sold or they are too rich to afford a brand new one. and some sellers doesn't know the value of items they sell. i for once bought a very mint condition MT2 for only 200 pesos (rougly less than 4$).

Whow that is cool, now I understand why you have that username
No really, that is great, and yep, sometimes you need that luck, but I guess it becomes rarer and rarer with so much info around us about alll kind of products. I even managed to find a pricelist of Roland and Boss gear from 1979, from that I learned that the CE-1 sells now second hand for almost the same as the newprice in 1979............. |
