Hi,
there is a technical problem with my loved CE-2 Pedal.
Some days ago I wanted to replace the 9-volt battery of my CE-2. I connected the battery to the snap and seconds later it began to smoke and to stink. Hasty I pulled the snap to stop the smoke. Now the lead wire is broken. With an adapter the Chorus works fine (but prefer the battery mode...)
Can anybody explain whaat happened to the CE-2?
Do you know anybody in Germany who can repair the pedal?

It sounds like the reverse polarity protection diode (which I think is D7, but don't have a schematic to hand at the moment) has burnt out, but I can't think why this would happen if the battery was connected the right way round. If this is the case and you are reasonably confident with a soldering iron you may be able to repair this and the snapped battery lead yourself.
If you could post some internal pics of the circuit board that would help.
I don't know of any repairers in Germany but if you get stuck then PM me and I can probably help you out (I am based in the UK).

Welcome to the forum from Australia.
Please upload some pics of the insides of your CE-2.
They tend to be easy to repair.
Do you have access to soldering equipment, & can solder.
Or maybe a friend-relation that can do the soldering for you.
As Scarymonsta, has already mentioned it's probably the protection diode.
Circuit reference D7.
Can you tell us what happened to your CE-2 before iw started to smoke?
Maybe reversed voltage from a plug pack power supply?
Or perhaps Over voltage?
Or perhaps bother?
Please keep us informed of your progress.

Unfortunately Iīm not able to solder and I havenīt got a soldering equipment (but a friend of mine has got one, I probably ask him to solder...)

Iīve done nothing to get excited about. Last months I used the CE2 with a "no name" 9volt adapter and the pedal worked fine (as I mentioned it also works fine with the adapter at the moment). Reverse voltage is not the reason. Over voltage? I donīt think so, the battery works fine with my other Boss pedals...
But I should mention two other things:
The battery mode seems to be the weak point of my CE2. Four years ago I had a similar problem (see http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=487). The problem could be solved, but perhaps thereīs a correlation between the new and the old problem.
Furthermore it is funny that the CE2 works with my PSA-like adapter (nice bright red light compared to my other 80s Boss AC pedals when used with the no name PSA adapter). I bought the pedal used and I think that the previous owner modified it, but Iīm not sure. Can you confirm it if you see the internal pics of the CE2?

Hi again,
Iīve sent the CE-2 to the german Roland/Boss-Service. They checked the pedal and found out that the battery snap caused a short circuit, apart of that everything was was ok. These guys are really great, they even repaired the pedal for free! Thatīs a great service!

It's always good news to hear that someone has repaired another Boss pedal.
especially if it's one of the older ones.
And of course one my favorites like a CE-2.

and the blue paint on the inside of your CE2
Glad to hear it was a simple fix of the battery snap
Had the same thing happen to both my fuzz/wahs days with each other
forgot to mention, the CE2 is always smokin' |
