So i'm looking to add more pedals to the setup, and next up I was thinking of a chorus.
Basically I want to slowly replace my Zoom 707 multi FX (i got it off a friend for $20 - it does the job for now) by getting pedals that not only are better, but offer something a bit more interesting
so yeah, rather than just get something 'basic' like a CE-2, I'm looking at maybe a CE-5 or the CE-20. also in consideration is a DC-3.
the music we play is strongly influenced by Sonic Youth, Swervedriver, MBV.... so FX wise I'd like to get sounds a bit different to "normal".
an idea is my current favourite I made on the Zoom is a standard phaser with the rate adjusted by the pedal, so it starts with a slow sweep and as the song part builds up i rock the pedal down and end up with the rate at full.
so in short, what are your opinions of
CH-1 CE-5 CE-20 DC-3
thanks |

| I can only talk about CH-1 and CE-5, but I prefer the CE-5! |

Chorus is my favorite effect. I own many many different types...
CH-1 - leaves me cold. Not warm at all. Mine is in storage.
CE-5 - There are 2 versions. I have the older analogue version and it is very nearly as nice as my CE-2
CE-20 - don't ownone, but would buy one for the right price. Looks good on paper.
DC-3 - Can't comment as I've never heard one.

Hi peebo
I might suggest you take a listen to the: Arion SCH-1 Chorus, can be very wet & very Lush, if that's the sort of "more interesting" that you were thinking about.
And it's switchable from Mono to Stereo Out.
The reissue SCH-Z is not as good to my ear, but it is a lot easier to get.

the DC-3 is very nice, but is a rather subtle effect IIRC. and I never use my analog CE-5, because my MIJ CE-2 sounds that good.
can't comment on the CH-1 or CE-20.
good luck! |

You know what... forget all those other chorii pedals and buy a MIJ CE-2. It's all you'll need
If you absolutely must have stereo out, buy an early eanlogue CE-5.

The CE5 was the first Boss pedal I bought, and it has done me many years service. And still will.
I have an analogue (late 80's) version. |

I have both the DC3 and CE2, and they both sound great in they own way Digital and perfect synch and stereo, and then to the lush analog detuning Almost opposite ends of the chorus spectrum imho Wouldn't mind picking up a analog CE5 sometime tho There's also the DC2 to consider, and the PS3/5 have Detuning functions as well |

thanks everyone! obviously the CE-2 is a popular choice!
what's the obvious differences between and analog and digital CE-5? apart from how they're made obviously, I assume that the newer digital wouldnt sound as warm and friendly?
Laurie - I couldnt help but smile when you said the CH-1 leaves you cold. the reason - Miki from Lush used one, and one of their songs is called "leaves me cold" ;) |

the analog CE-5 is more up front and true/warm sounding.
the digital CE-5 sounds "distant" and sterile and has a bit of artificial reverb on it.
the digital CE-5 is also prone to digital distortion if you clip the input. i prefer the digital CH-1 to the digital CE-5 but i prefer analog versions of both.
i used to hate the CH-1, but that was mostly back in my younger days when i used chorus pedals as more of a high rate leslie warble and the CE-5 (and CE-3 but that one's poopy) will do that while the other chorus pedals will not.
imo, the CH-1 is closer to a CE-2. better at low rates for more of a spacial lush sound. crank the rate up on the CH-1 and it sounds terrible. the CE-2's rate doesn't go high enough to sound terrible.
for your soundscape, the CE-5 is probably the best bet.

another note is that since i sold my DM-3 earlier this week (i rarely if ever use delay) my loop board is now a BF-2, CE-2 (rate set low), and CE-5 (rate set really high).
the CE-5 really has the greatest sonic palette out of all the boss chorii.
the CE-2 imo sounds the best for what chorus actually sounds like.
the CH-1 i think is under-rated as i realize it's quite good for helping your tone cut through a mix. not as warm as the CE-5 or CE-2, but still works. |

ahh thanks for saying what I actually meant! it sounds like the CE-2 is the best chorus, but CE-5 I'll find more useful and I'm more likely to find that personal sound/s i want.

anyone saying they're influenced by sonic youth generally needs a wider effect palette than the rest of us. |

Hi peebo & Guys
I must have misread your main post, as I assumed you were looking for something other than the traditional CE-2/5 Chorus sound. And that's why I suggested the SCH-1.
