| Hi everyone, I'm looking for a great overdrive pedal (I love Boss pedals), and have narrowed my search down to the BD-2 or the OD-3. I'm looking for something that won't kill my natural tone. I play a Gibson Les Paul Jr. (P90) through a Fender Blues Jr. I usually have my amp set up on the edge of breakup (breakup when playing chords, no breakup on single notes) and I will be using the pedal on top of that setting. I would be using a DS-1 for the heavy stuff, so the pedal doesn't need to get really heavy on distortion. So, any winner out of those 2 for what I'm looking for? |

I think that you're going to have to make this call on your own, after having evaluated both of them...
To my ears, the BD-2 has more "crunch" to it at higher drive settings, somewhat similar to the MIJ DS-1. The OD-3 might have an edge for clean boosting an amp, though. There seem to be more tone modifications available for the BD-2.
I have both, and I really like both, but I have a slight preference for the BD-2 -- but that's just me, and you might hear it differently.
And see -- even the guys at Boss can't make up their minds:

well this is like saying is Segall better than Van Damme. the OD-3 and BD-2 are both wonderful pedals and i think it just comes down to personal preference as they are both similar in sound. although i think the BD-2 has a better reputation for being more "natural" and letting your guitar sound through.
Good luck |

thanks guys, i'm going to get to go to guitar center at lunch today to try out these pedals (hopefully they have both).
unfortunately i can't take my guitar and amp with me...if those pedals sound good through their pedal-area setup (usually a fender strat and some solid state amp job...like a crate or marshall), would it be safe to assume that it would sound just as good (if not better) through my setup? |

absolutly.
when i got my OD-3 first i had a solid state amp and found the OD-3 to be rough and too transparent sounding but when i dug it out and ran it into my tube amp it was like a different pedal. |

hey guys, well i just got back from guitar center. to my suprise they had a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe set up for the Boss pedals! i figured this must be my lucky day...the Hot Rod deluxe clean sounds pretty similar to the Blues Jr. clean, no?
anyhow, they didn't have the OD-3 pedal, but they did have the BD-2 and the SD-1 (along with the DS-1 that i already have).
i thought the BD-2 sounded GREAT. i thought it sounded just like my Blues Jr.'s overdrive...which is actually why i ended up giving the nod towards the SD-1 i kind of wanted a tone that was different than i could get from my amp by itself.
the SD-1 just had "that" tone that i had in my head. i guess i like the mid boost! i also felt that the SD-1 layered in better to give the DS-1 a boost for solos (not necessarily a volume boost, but a nice tone difference that sounds like it'd cut through really well). when i layered the BD-2 onto the DS-1, it just sounded like the DS-1.
anyhoo, just wanted to report back...thanks for all your replies. |

One great OD to consider is Boss SD-2, the crunch mode is very transparent and to my ears sound very, very good. The lead channel is also good but not outstanding. A bit hard to find but well worth a search.

you should check out the od2 as well, you can pick them up secondhand fairly cheap at the moment, the 'r' version gives you the option to switch between the turbo and non turbo modes remotly with a footswitch,i have the older version and if i was only bringing a small setup to a gig this is the first one to go into the guitar case....i've seen reviews where people said they went back to using it over more expensive 'boutique' pedals and it was a favourite of the edge from u2 for years..... |

ya like Goran said, the SD-2 does pretty much the whole Shebang for Overdrive. you can get close to all the other Boss OD's with this one. |

I have the od-3, bd-2 and sd-1. I must say, that the sd-1 is a versatile pedal...it's mid boost is something the others don't have. |

well, as it turns out, the more i played with the SD-1, the more i didn't like it. when i got home and plugged everything into my rig and played a while, i was wishing more that i had a pseudo-2nd channel for my blues jr. rather than an extraneous additional tone to my setup.
so on saturday, i went and returned the SD-1 and got the BD-2. working out perfectly. just thought i'd share |
