So, tonight I finally went to my first shredder concert. I mean, I've seen some serious guitarists in action in their bands (Muse, Alter Bridge, Pearl Jam etc) but this was my first Solo instrumentalist show. I went to see Joe Satriani and Paul Gilbert at the Bristol Colston Hall and it was fantastic. Paul Gilbert was on for an hour at the start and was stunning, he played a really good blend of new tracks from his instrumental albums, some Racer X tunes and finished with Down to Mexico and the drill song. He's a really good showman and you can tell he loves playing. His wife was also on stage playing the keyboards, keeping perfectly in time with him. It was really impressive. She also played the cowbell with one hand and the keyboard with the other throughout Norwegian Cowbell. As for Satriani, he opened with a track off his new album and played a few classics, but then he wandered off into playing a load of samey new material, which to me sounded like an easy 4/4 backing track that he was blazing over. To be fair to him though, he was playing for almost 3 hours. It picked up towards the end with great tracks like Cool #9, cryin' and of course Surfing with the Alien.
So, has anyone else witnessed any of these guitar gods? they seem to divide opinion somewhat. Yngwie Malmsteen is in town in a few weeks, but I think I'll pass on him |

| I saw Satriani back during his Flying In a Blue Dream days in DC as a kid. This was back when he had Stu Hamm on bass with him. Definitely a great show. |

I've seen satriani 3 times here in dublin, also i went to see steve vai once....i have also seen the usual suspects knopfler,clapton,eagles,dylan..etc.....robben ford was here about 8 years ago that was a great gig.... i agree with the 'samey' comment....(i only had this conversation the other day with a mate of mine)as brillant as the shredders are..to be honest i get a little bored after the first few numbers....robben ford was a great gig because his playing is within the songs structure and compliments the music,i also saw steely dan in around '96 and that was a truly amazing gig..some of the best musicianship i have ever seen and excellent tunes throughtout.....as sacreligious as this may be to some guitar players ..i'm actually enjoying playing songs with a good story to them lyric wise over the last few years and not just wishing they would hurry up and get to the guitar solo..... having said all the above i still bought tickets for john mclaughlin who is here on the 30th of may.....i couldn't let this go as he was and still is one of my musicial heroes when i was growing up... especially his acoustic playing, and if jeff beck ever decided to play dublin i would also go,as i think players like this 'raise the bar' when it comes to instrumental music....... ......... |
