| I would like to know what you think of of ds-1 mod.I had my bd-2 done,it sound great so crystal clear i don't think that it has enough grit for me. so i an thinking of getting a ds-1.I like the ds-1 but it is kind thin cause of no bottom end on it. which keeley fixes.and gets rid of noise and gives some clarity. |

| Keeley has the SEM published on his web site - I've done it to a couple of DS-1's and they sound great. I'd never go back to a stock DS-1... |

Hi zerksies
Welcome to the forum from Australia.
Unfortunately with all the mods that are around, you really need to hear them on your setup, before you can really tell, if they will WORK for YOU.
Laurie's suggestion of the SEM is worth thinking about.
Regards Dr. Bob |

| www.proguitarshop.com has a video demo of the Keeley DS-1. I thought it sounded pretty good. I have never actually tried the pedal myself, but I would consider buying it at some point in the future. |

| I have a Keeley modded DS-1, and while I like the SEM mod, I cannot really find a sound I like, or a use at this point, for the Ultra Mod. The SEM sounds good, but its been awhile since I played it so I'll need to double check if it gives some bottom end since you mentioned you are looking for that... |

i like the seeing eye mod. the ultra is way too clean/loud imo.
when i did the research and found it's like $5 in parts, the thought of paying $75 to have it modded went out the window. |

Yeah, the $75 Keeley charges may seem like a bit much, but you have to keep in mind that they are also charging for labor, and then shipping your pedal back to you is also covered in that $75, so its not like they are putting that $70 extra in the bank...maybe a big chunk of it, but still I know what you mean, but you also have to remember that not every guitar player is like many members of this forum, in that we have no problems taking things apart and many of us also have many of the parts and tools needed to do this mod. If you don't already have the parts and tools on hand, not even getting into the knowledge and skills to do the mod, then you are probably looking at spending at least $40-50 to get all the parts and tools...so yes, its seems a bit outrageous, but it just depends on what side of the soldering iron you are used to being on... |

i consider some of his pedals to be a decent deal. especially ones that have a high retail price point and have really really small components/board markings (e.g. MT-2).
the DS-1 is one that i don't condone as 1) i try to empower people into believing they are able to do something that really isn't all htat hard and 2) the DS-1 can regularly be purchased for $20-25 on the used market which gives you 3+ tries at messing up if you attempt to mod it :) |

i agree. i think the SEM is the perfect balance of distortion and loudness for a DS-1. i couldn't even complete some of the component changes in the SEM as the local electronic store does not have some of the components.

| i tried to get the stuff too. but to hard to get. i can get kits on ebay but it's way over priced.i would rather spend money and get it from the man himself.it so good that even boss tells about it on the website. if a bi company that big is telling us about it it has to be good |

Just responding to the thought that you can do this mod for "a few dollars in parts".
The capacitors I use are nearly $1 each (even when bought in lots of 50+ like I do). The last time I added it up it was over $12 do this mod using all high quality parts, just for the parts. More like $15 if you add the consumables like solder wick, solder, board cleaner, etc.
EDIT: that's for the SEM plus Ultra. SEM alone is about $8 |

Are you saying he has schematics of it on his website? I can't find it, perhaps you could point me in the right direction? I found my old distortion pedal that I made and it has me wanting to get back into making/modding things instead of just repairing my old gear. |

i have em here: http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4594
have moved a grand total of 1 kit via this board and 1 kit via another board hehe.
someone did give me the part # of a radio shack switch that fits for the ultra/sem toggle and is like $2.
laurie, you talkin bout the 1uf caps?
i'm willing to piece together mod kits with what i've got for the same per-item price breakdowns if someone has any requests for different mods and has the specs. i'm at a point though where i'm not really doing any mods so i probably won't be buying any parts i don't have, but i could definitely fill partials.

he used to have the old 5-star mod posted on his site too, but took it down when it got changed to the stacked jrc4558d's. |
