StratoSphere wrote in another topic: dont hate me for saying this, but i think every company should stop making distortion/OD pedals. theres really nowhere else to go, and BOss in particular hasnt really impressed me with anything new post 2000. (besides RC-2 and possibly PS-5)
This is a good topic to discuss! Would be interesting to hear your views on this.
In my opinion the last really good Boss pedal was OD-3 released in 1997. Then there was nothing, and nothing, and nothing until FBM-1 came out this year. That one I like a lot, mostly when playing at bedroom levels.

| Well Goran, Ive got to disagree with you. For me, theyve released at least 2 good pedals after the OD-3 in 1997: the BF-3 and the MD-2. After that, I cant say (I havent had the opportunity to test PS-5, RC-2, AW-3, amongst others), but at least these 2 Ive got to consider. |

| I think that since there are a wide variety of distortion and overdrive sounds being desired, Boss is just trying to cover all the bases, and appeal to everyone. Some of the newer distortions and overdrives may not be to your liking, but it'd be interesting to see what those who purchased newer models thought about some of the older ones...As far as companies should stop making ODs and Distortions because there's nowhere else to go...there may be nowhere else to go, but not everyone has gotten there yet... |

There are lots of interesting new DS/OD pedals out there, things like the Metal Muff and Bad Monkey... but they're not coming from Boss.
Price is an issue, too. Why should I pay 80 for a DN-2 (Far East made, digital) when I can buy a US made analogue distortion (Metal Muff) for 50?
I think Roland have got their brand positioning a bit wrong at the moment; they're not cheap and cheerful, they're not boutique, they just ain't got the rock. The basic design of the compact pedal range means that we know their pedals are roadworthy and good value, but their current range is not exciting. I guess that's why we're all off collecting the old ones... |

| The ML-2 is a phenomenal pedal. I use it every gig for Eruption and audience and band members just rave about it's sound. |

| If not for the RC-2, I might've said the DC-2. |

well i shouldnt have said that most new pedals arent good... i guess what i meant is i find the majority of them to be rather mediocre. distortions in particular. like the FZ-3 for instance. i find that the FZ-3 tone can be exactly replicated with the previous model the FZ-2 which kind of makes its existence pointless to me. same with other very similar models such as MZ-2, DS-2, MD-2 etc. obviously they do differ slightly, but i could run a basic distortion box such as the HM-2 or DS-1 through a GE-7 and have all those pedals.
although picking the last good pedal from Boss can be tricky. like i said the RC-2 is an instant classic. i find the PS-5 to be love-hate. i really dislike the harmonizer, but LOVE the T Arm feature. i found the two new mod boxes (PH-3 and BF-3) to be love/hate as well in the sense that the extra features are super awesome, but i find the straight phase/flange lack what the previous models had.
but i guess thats the beauty of effects. everybody has their own opinions and what one person finds useless, could be anothers holy grail. |

what about the DD-6?
that has to be the perfect blend of features and usability. |

| Oh, I forgot DD-6, its really good, but DD-20 is much better/versatile. |

I think the ML-2 is awesome... and so is the two Fender pedals. Have a feeling that I will soon say the RE-20 is the last good Boss pedal. |

Hi Bossarea.
Do you use your ML-2 for metal sounds, or more as a hard distortion? Or maybe some other way.
Regards Dr. Bob

I use the ML-2 for metal sounds and shredding. It covers up my sloppy technique |

Some very good points here!!
In the rock music of today you do not hear often the sounds of an OD1 anymore. Some younger players may feel it is too much of a retrosound.
Apart from the pedals already mentioned as good ones which came after 2000 I would like to add the RV5, it is a very versatile reverb. |
