Is one analog and one digital? Which is regarded as sounding better?
Version differences There are 2 versions of the CE-5 where the second version is denoted CE-5A. This is printed on the PCB so it is easy to figure out which version you have. The first version is closely related to the CE-2 and CE-3. It uses the 1024 stage Panasonic BBD MN3007 and its associated clock driver 3101. The CE-5A is completely restructured. It uses surface mounted components and the BBD has been replaced with a digital design. All CE-5s made before October 2001 should have the old circuit. Use the serial number decoder on the 'Other Products' menu to find out when your CE-5 was made. |

Yep, the original CE-5 & CH-1 were analog. They changed in October 2001 to the digital version. It's been awhile since I did my A/B tests, but with 1, the CH-1 I believe, the digital had more bass. In the other, the analog had more bass. Those were the most obvious differences to me. More samples may have produced other results. The digital versions were quieter (less high freq. hiss), but otherwise were surprisingly similar. Pretty hard to mod the digital versions, though.

I hadn't noticed that bossarea added the analog/digital info to the descriptions. This really IS the best place on the web to get Boss info.
Bossarea, you should add that to the CH-1 description as well.

but I did. I changed it after you told us when the CH-1 changed
the CH-1 underwent significant design changes October 2001. The CH-1s made after this time uses digital circuitry and surface mounted components while the older version uses an analog BBD.

The CE-5 had a bold subheading, the CH-1 didn't. I wasn't looking close enough. Sorry.
