Greetings,
I'm new to the forum, but I've found some good info for a lot of questions I had already.
I'm looking for a versatile distortion pedal. I have an MT-2, but it's a little over-the-top for what I'm looking for.
I'm trying to get the sound of early Dokken, King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, early Dio.
You get the idea, '80s metal - not hair metal though!
I've been looking at the DS-2, HM-2, MD-2 and XT-2, but have not heard any of them yet. There are so many to choose from.
I'm going through a clean channel on a tube amp.
Could someone give me some comparisons or suggest something I haven't listed. I know I've probably missed some candidates.
Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated.

| I haven't tested the MD-2, so I cannot comment on it, but out of the 4 pedals you mentioned, I think the HM-2 is the best choice. of the other 3, the DS-2 might give you the sound you want, but the XT-2 probably will not. you might also try the HM-3. |

| I have an HM-3 and it would probably the best choice for what you are going for. Good luck. |

| The HM-2 is very Marshally, whereas the MZ-2 is more of a Mesa distortion sound. Both would be suitable, the MZ-2 has the doubling function which is okay on the first mode. It beefs up those Diad passages in Lightning Strikes... |

| You might want to check out the DS-1, or a modded version of it. |

The Boss Distortion I like most for heavy metal type is without doubt DS-1 (with the TA7136AP opamp). I dont like MT-2 very much, MZ-2 is OK but dont touch DS-1, HM-2 is good but it has no distortion-range (either on or off ), HM-3 is OK but not more. My opinions... |

For 80s metal I'm with the other posters who suggested the HM-2 and HM-3. The HM-3 has more gain than the MT-2 and the HM-2 a little less but they're all high gain pedals.
Best of all is that the HM pedals are plentiful and reasonably priced |

HM-2 Marshall?? Are you sure you are not mistaken with the MT-2?? |

Nope. I swear the HM-2 sounds just like my old 8100 head. True, it was the first edition Valvestate and therefore not a 'proper' Marshall...

Right that explains. When you mentioned Marshall I was thinking of JMP's, Superlead, Superbass, you know, the 70s sound of the Marshall, not really their modern version.
The MT-2 sounds like a modded version of the models Marshall had in the 80s, not sure about the modelnumbers. Listening to recordings of the 80s [some of the older hard-and heavy metal and even some Guns and Roses] you can hear that sound, and yes, the MT-2 can get you some of those sounds.
HM-2 has just one sound eh? I like it as it can sound like a great, bad fuzzsound, by using a TW-1 AFTER it you can even tweak that Fuzz sound a little more. In this setup you will not get any Wah sounds, because the dynamics have been killed by the HM-2, so the TW-1 acts just as an extra tonecontrol for your HM-2. In case you do not have a TW-1, do not worry, any autofilter would do that job. |
