Hello people. You know that BOSS is getting more and more digital. As time went by, they´ve turned all of their modulation/ambience pedals into digital. Now they´re making they´re dist/od pedals digital too (or at least that´s what I´ve heard: not only FZ-5, FBM-1 and FDR-1, but also DN-2 and ML-2 are COSM modellers). Aren´t they sounding too much artificial? What do you think? |

| Should BOSS keep on being digital or should they go back to the analog world? |

I personally think they should be developing both analog and digital. I quite like digital at times because it has a certain consistency in sound to me.
It would be a shame if all Boss did were digital pedals. |

its nice to think about all analog, but what can Boss do in the analog world that they havent already done? analog chorus...CE-2. analog delay..DM-2. the list goes on.

| as Boss has never gotten around to reissuing the DM-2 or DM-3 (which are both in demand), I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to introduce more ananlog pedals |

And if they release a DM-5 it will probaply be a cosm one, simulating the analog DM-2 and DM-3 |

Hi sp-1
Really good point, you just made there sp-1.
Seems that, that is they way they have been heading for quite some time now. Not to mention the: GT-3 - 5 - 6 - 8 Multi-effects pedals. Duo pedals. VG-88. PW-10 COSM Wah pedal. The new Cube Amplifiers. And the later GR guitar synths.
I'm sure I missed a few as well.

Roland/Boss doesn't seem to be a company that look back. My impression is that they want to develop new products using new technologies. If they continue in this direction they will probably turn their backs on anything analog.
Personally I don't have a problem with that. I think they've taken the analog devices as far as they could and continuing producing analog devices would be walking the same track as they've already done. |

Could be the cost factor too. Its cheaper to have automated machines build the pcb boards than to have people populate the board by hand, or called PTH, put-through-hole.
The machine pays for itself quickly, whereas the manufacture has to keep paying the skilled people. It still needs people to operate the machines and assemble them into the pedal chassis.
sorry for the grim opinion... |

If the digital pedals sounds fine it´s OK, and most all of them do. But digital can not to 100% reproduce the analog signal that enters the pedal, you know the steplike response. I can´t hear it but it disturbs me sometimes… in a way. Analog is generally considered sounding warmer, more natural, and many find them sounding better. I like the feeling of an old analog pedal, just as I like the feeling of a vintage guitar. So I feel more than hear the difference, if that makes sense… But if there is a big demand in analog pedals in the future it would be crazy if Boss didn´t respond to this and left a huge market to other manufacturers. I like most of the new COSM-pedals very much by the way. But sometimes I get a feeling that this is not the real thing, but as I said I can´t hear it.

I'm with goran on this subject....the only digital effects i still use is my two dd3's and i think it was someone on this forum who pointed out that the dd3 even though it uses a digital chip the rest of the pedal is analog so maybe thats why it's so popular....i used a line 6 pod xt pro for a while in the effects loop of a marshall amp and while it sounded great....after a while it sounded a little bit 'plastic' to me..(sounds great for recording though)so i dug out my boss pedals and valve amps a few years ago and haven't looked back since....and what really suprised me the most is people who don't play the guitar commenting on the sound lately and how good it is..... i guess i'm a child of analog as well when it comes to effects..... |
