OK... finally found the time to try this.

Mullard reissue in V1 is audibly smoother. A good start! (but it is still harsh)

Need to get rid of the rest of the harshness... I'm thinking a more laid back speaker? but would appreciate any suggestions.

I just added the cab. It has a Celestion vintage 30. But I only use the boost switch when I am using the cab. In parallel with the stock speaker I think it sounds pretty good. If you do replace the speaker in the amp, you can use a 8 ohm speaker instead of the 16 ohm Blue Marvel if you put a blank 1/4" plug into the external speaker jack. This switches the output tranny to 8 ohms so you can use a 8 ohm speaker if you can't find a good deal on a 16 ohm speaker or if you want to try an 8 ohm speaker that you have. I think Celestion is the way to go, or a cab.

I've had good luck with a couple of celestion greenbacks in my 2 X 12 for the marshall..these were not reissues..i was lucky enough to have two original ones, not the real old 60's ones but i reckon early 70's...i had a couple of vintage 30's before that..great sounding speaker but really loud and a bit more in your face than the greenbacks.....maybe a jensen...? i've read reports of some of the Fender blues jr's tweed reissues with the jensen being really good sounding amps..a lot of people put it down to the speaker...i tried the musicman through the 2 x 12 when it had the V30's in it and it made the amp sound very different..changing the speaker IMHO will make a big difference even more the the preamp valves....

Maybe it's not the speaker...

Looking at doing these mods - an acquaintance here mentioned he had a friend who did these and it turned the Classic 30 into his favorite amp (without changing the speaker...):

Hi Laurie

Looks good.
But be warned, you might fall out of love with your new Fender.

I'm going to be recording soon with my tube amp and need to buy a 5751 to try lowering the clean channel's gain. I found a Sovtek 5751 and a JAN-Philips for sale on TheTubeStore.com but I can't find a Mullard 5751. Can anybody tell me if I should just use the other brands I've found, or know where I can buy a Mullard 5751 from in America?

Mullards are not made anymore,so they can be pricey and sometimes hard to find...there is another thread about this stuff...

http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5485. if you can look outside the usual places sometimes you never know what you find........slow down passing a builders skip........
