I would be interesting to know what the goal is, for those of you who are collectors of Boss pedals, for your collecting. As many as possible I think we all can answer. But do you have any more precise direction in you collecting? I guess all of us started up with a couple of Boss pedals and just wanted some more, and when we had some more there is a possibility that we made a plan of further collecting.
For myself my first goal was to get all the overdrives and distortions, Ive managed to get them all rather fast. If that goal has to be valid I now have to buy all the five new Boss pedals, expensive The second goal was to get all the early ones, Im nearly there just missing PH1R. The third goal was to get them all, Im not there yet. The forth goal was to get all the Micro racks, Im halfway there. A goal that has been in me back head all the time is to have a complete Silver screw collection, I still miss some here. And after I got to know that SD-1 also was made with SS this is going to be a hard one.
Its possible it will take years to get to my goals, but thats the great thing about collecting. As Sunburst told me once, collecting Boss is like fishing. You can much easier buy a couple of fishes instead of walking to a river in bad weather and trying for hours just to get a tiny one. But what is the most fun??? I could get all of my goals above satisfied in a short space of time if I just pull up enough money, but I dont think thats good sportmansship.

I think my goal is to show my father that this is a good investment, just like stocks. He said that he give me 10$ for every pedal I can sell for a higher price than I bought it for. And of course I want to get all before I can sell them off. |

From the start my goal was to get one of every type. That's still my first priority so getting the 5 new pedals is most important for me right now.
My secondary goal is to get all the different versions. I still don't have a Super Distortion, Space D or OD-1 with 14 pin opamp. This is my secondary goal and it takes a long time because they don't show up too often and when they do they're usually over priced.
I don't really have a defined third goal. I picked up all the micro rack modules last year but I'm not sure whether to hold on to them or not. I only consider myself collecting the compact pedals. |

im the type of person who collects things. i have a huge horror movie collection, cards, comics etc.
yup i started with just a few. my goal actually started with all the chorus' and i got that. now its all the distortion/OD's. i WAS one away (OD-3) until the folks at Boss decided to release 3 more . but i think im just going to go for the full set. im 28 away i think which seems like a long way, but i remember having 12 Boss pedals in total and that was only 2 years ago. even though i do need the 3 "super rares" and that will be difficult

| I have got to admit my collection is in part for investment purposes. I have duplicates of a few pedals I think have price appreciation potential. I especially like rare pedals that are mint with original box and manual. Some are nearly impossible to find in that condition so I may settle for something in excellent condition with original box or something with a low serial number. These pedals probably are not a good investment since I would have a really hard time selling any of them. Maybe if prices sky rocket into 59 Les Paul territory I might be willing to part with a few? |

My goal is to get the old pedals in their different version (Super Dist, Super Feed - T-Wah, Touch Wah - Space-D, Dimension D etc.) and ofcourse all the silver screw versions. But I dream of some day owning them all
But i also buy everything else BOSS like older non-stompbox effects, merchandice etc. Hard to stop once you first get going.
And driving the wife crazy with all the packages arriving in the post is a not so bad side effect
Cheers

In general, I like distortion/overdrive/fuzz pedals, and to a lesser extent chorus pedals and parametric eq's. given the build quality of (MIJ) Boss pedals, I started seeking them out. I have since 'diversified' somewhat (everyone should own at least one of the Rat and Big Muff variants), and more recently I've been looking at DOD pedals (design flaws aside, most of them are relatively cheap at the moment).
before winter NAMM 2007, I had every Boss distortion pedal, so my long-term goal (this year or next) is to buy the newest three (five, if you count the Fender boxes). I've given up hope of ever having every Boss pedal (unless I first buy a winning lottery ticket), but I would also like to eventually have a few of the Grail and near-Grail Boss pedals (SP-1, OD-1A, DM-3). I would also like the near-Grail DOD pedals (mostly the Gonkulator and the Buzz Box), but those are too expensive to be priorities right now.
my near-term goal is to accumulate, organize, and publish data from my DOD pedals. I don't want to create the DOD equivalent of bossarea.com (bossarea, the work you must put into this site makes me tired just thinking about it!), but it would be nice to correlate serial number to year produced and provide some basic info, at least for Made in USA DOD pedals. I'll post a link here when the 'beta' site is complete, if not later this month, then by May or June.... |

My collecting isn't turning out as I originally intended. I kept very little from my youth, pedals or otherwise, and just wanted to re-obtain the pedals I once had. I now have 8 pedals (including 2 'on the way') and only one of them is a pedal that I owned when I was younger (an MXR DynaComp).
There's just too much temptation to try out new (ok, new old) effects. Also the pedals I was originally after, while not rare, are hard to find in the condition I sold mine. That fact in itself shows I'm maybe more in the 'collecting' camp than the 'player' camp. I do intend to get a lot of use out of them all though. I've probably 'replaced' my originals anyway - I'm building a BYOC fuzz, and got a replacement for my old CE-3. I'd still like to find a BF-2.
The good thing with guitar effects from a collecting point of view is that old effects still appeal to younger musicians, so they will probably hold onto most of their value. I didn't buy mine with hopes of seeing the value rise, but it may well do in some cases. They're also good to collect as they are still useful and take up little space (as compared to my other stuff...)
My other collection (1980's BMX bicycles) is a different kettle of fish. Prices just now are high, but the appeal is much more limited, almost exclusively for people my age who had them in the 80's. Those collecting now may well be the last generation who will be interested in buying them, never mind pay increased prices in the future. Younger cyclists want the latest (as I did back then) and tearing around a bicycle track on 25 year-old metal is not a good idea anyway from a safety point of view.
I see movies mentioned above, my only other collecting craze would be Sci-Fi DVD's. I shudder to think what they cost versus what I could sell them for. Definitely not a good investment, though I've been careful and only bought favourites. I need to wait about a year between watches though to enjoy them, that's the only problem. |

When i first started to play, my bud taught me and he had a FAB distortion. I thought it was the coolest thing since i never knew about pedals. Then he said he a pedal that was 100x better. a Boss Metal Zone. I remembered that name, and as soon as i went home, i picked one up (before i even had an amp to play it with ). Since then ive only bought boss pedals. (except 2). Its starting to become an adiction and i check the mailbox a couple times a day when i should be getting a new pedal. My final goal was to have every pedal, and all of them SS and with variations (PH-1r). I know thats not happenining anytime soon though. Im going to be selling them off soon, but one day i hope to get them all back (and more). |

The goal is to find pedals that I can use to improve or provide variety to my sound/tone. If I can't use it I don't need it |

I always enjoyed fishing more than going to the local supermarket with a pocket full of cash to buy my fish...(read E-Bay)
When it comes to my collection, I focus mainly on building a complete silver screw collection. But I also monitor the local market for other rare pedals that comes along. |

I have few years collecting and buying Boss pedals, about six or seven years. My fisrt approach to guitar effects was a RP-3 Digitech, was very useful to know what the effects do and how they sound. But I noticed that even in the "Bypass" mode the guitar sound was different. The effect order and some combination was not possible to set, either. So I started to buy compact effect pedals, I was choosing between Boss pedals and Ibanez pedals. But I have a saying, if you are going to spend money you'd better spend it on whatever you really want, otherwise it will not worth it. I choosed the Boss Xtortion, months later I got a DD-5. What I really liked from my DD-5 and many of Boss pedals are the different modes. My DD-5 has long and short delays, reverse delay and tap tempo; my old Digitech didn't have that. I think I have a tiny obssesive collector gene too. I have the whole discography of not few of my favorite bands. I have 5 dictionaries, same publisher, same presentation, different languages, English-Spanish, Italian-Spanish, French-Spanish, German-Spanish, Portuguese-Spanish. If the publisher had other languages I'd probably have got them. I don't speak Portuguese, Italian nor German. French and English a little. I started to buy jigsaw puzzles, I have accomplished some 1000 pieces jigsaws, I have the aim on a 4000 pieces jigsaw, 136 x 96 cm. Parts of the same obssesive tendency, aren't they? |

I also have the collector bug/gene whatever.
My ultimate goal is to get them all (compact) - all versions, SS/plastic screw, different names (Super Dist/Super Feedbacker) etc. This will take me a lot of time. I started fairly quickly but have slowed down a little (family to feed!).
I now have about 28 pedals with some SS/plastic and different named versions. Still a LONG way to go, I know. But it's FUN!!!! |

I should also mention that I collect information. Not only do I want all the different pedals, I also want to know when production moved from Japan to Taiwan for every pedal, when the different labels were introduced and when changes were made. That's probably what takes most of my collection time. Trawling through Ebay auctions looking for serial numbers and labels, comparing component date codes with serial numbers and documenting everything in spreadsheets. I probably should have been a statistician. I even thought about it when I was 16 but it just sounded to boring. |
