I had sent my CE-2 (as well as CS-3 and GE-7) to get the Monte Allums mods the day before you posted this thread. I didn't respond at the time because I really didn't have anything to say.
I want to say at the outset that I hated, no REALLY HATED the stock CE-2 sound. It was perhaps my least favorite of the many Boss pedals I have. I'm starting there because I know many people really love the stock CE-2 sound. For me, the choice to mod was a very easy decision because I would never use the stock CE-2.
I received the pedals back Friday and I cannot say enough good things about all three! The CS-3 and GE-7 are wonderful, transparent and whisper quite at any setting. The CE-2 has moved from perhaps my very least liked to my top 5 favorite Boss pedals! Most definately my favorite Chorus. The best sound clip I have found is here:

I'm not trying to encourage you one way or the other, but from my experience it's a no brainer. |

Personally, I think the CE-2 is perfect as it is. I've recently found a new apprecation of the CE-3 too - perfect in stereo, but not good in mono. If you want a mono chorus, don't go modding the CE-3, because it isn't one, and there's no point making it into one - just buy a better mono chorus. As for the CE-2, there might be lots about, but if it's not the right chorus for you, why mod it? Sell it and try another.
I've only ever made minor mods to a couple of things, and reversed them with the original parts before selling. I have repaired a lot more, and I suppose it's a matter of personal opinion, but there's so much out there to try out, I don't see the point of making something into something it isn't, unless the mods are very definitely useful and are done well. If it's just a matter of increasing an LFO rate or changing a cap to let more bottom end through, fine, but radically altering the tone of something that was designed in a very specific way seems like a hiding to nothing to me. Much easier to swap the whole pedal and let somebody else enjoy it.  |

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. My amps are absolutely great. My ears (and other bodily orifaces) are spit spot.
I didn't want to sell it because I told myself on the outset (a year and a half ago, when I started buying pedals) that I would only buy pedals I really wanted and that I would not sell any gear/pedals. I have always ended up regretting having sold one thing or another in the past. I wasn't going to use it as it was, ever.
I don't understand circuits enough to know exactly what the mod did, but the pedal most definately sounds better. I wonder if any of the nay sayers have A/B'ed a stock and modded CE-2 and determined the stock one sounded better (undoubtedly the answer to this is NO)? Instead of heckles, why not be happy I ended up with a pedal I really like? |

You are correct - Tone is such a subjective thing.
I'm glad you are pleased with the modded CE-2.
As a quick insight.
My gigging CE-2 seems to have gone out of Spec.
And it no longer sounds like the CE-2 that I have become accustomed to,
So it's about to hit the Lab bench & get a once over, this weekend.
Perhaps your pedal drifted a bit as well, & Monty recalibrated it for you as part of the MOD?
As for and A/B test of a modded & a pile of my unmodded reference CE-2's
I have had both on the Lab Bench, Small studio & live stage.

But in the end, if you are happy with the end result, then that's all that matters.
I use my CE-2 as part of an acoustic live setup, set very subtly into the mix. It basically there to add a bit of Air to the tone.
I sometimes take an Arion SCH-1 chorus with me, just for a change.
Now that is one wet sounding chorus.
Good decision-move on making a stance to not sell your gear.
We all have some "I wish I hadn't story".
In fact, there was a thread about 18 mnths to 2 yrs ago on this subject.

Obviously, I bought the CE-2 used so I have no idea what usage it has seen. I had considered it may have had some worn innards (gone out of spec) but I really have no way of knowing, especially now. All I can say is I hated it, now I love it (incidentally, I received a GEM MINT DC-2 today, so I'm interested in trying her out - the children are sleeping).
As an artist/musician, I am the final judge of what sounds good for me. That goes for all of you out there too. Just because so many people say X pedal is great (or particularly not great) doesn't make it so. If you disagree with someone's opinion, fine, but do it respectfully. On one of the posted threads linked above a user got the Monte Allums CE-2 mod and was dissappointed. I would never tell them that they are wrong (or get their ears cleaned, or the like) for not liking the sound because I do like it.
If I wanted to please other people I would audition for a boy band. |

I think the guys were only buzzin' with ya a little bit bro'.... ... i don't think there was any offence meant or any asperations being cast about bodily hygiene functions... i use Mrs F's Q tips to clean out input jacks.......as i already posted i love my CE-2 as is.. but i'm also glad you like what the mod did for your CE-2..i'm not a collector so i'm happy to see pedals being used and not gathering dust especially a classic like the CE-2....but i'm a bit of an 80's freak anyway and to me it has the classic police/pretenders type sound,i've also reinstated my BF-2 to my board and you can get a nice chorus sound out of this pedal as well with the res down,unlike some reports i can get a nice warm sound out of the BF-2.the key really is the res knob and how you set it..
a bit of usless info for all you chorus/modulation lovers out there....contrary to popular reports andy summers did use a CE-2 in the Police..i have a DVD from their Madison square garden concert in the mid 80's and you can clearly see it on his pedalboard it a couple of shots.... |

I'm probably a bit late here; however, I would suggest that due to the CE-2 established value as a credible collectible and that there has been talk of the MIT CE-2 sounding close to the the MIJ CE-2 ... it may be a good idea to mess with that instead of MIJ CE-2. I have a greenback CE-2 from '84 and it has a glorious lushness to it, that I would not mess with.
I'd like to get my mitts on the Laurie Looper to deal with its volume gain (along with my PH-1r) so I can blend in a less "in your face" mix with these two pedals. |
