Hey guys, I've been looking to get a wah pedal, something i thought i never would do BUT... (as we all know) in time we develop a new taste for new sounds and experiences. so i was wondering if anyone could tell me which one of these are the best wah? i am sticking with dunlop because of the price range and i like their sound so please stay with these four that i am currently looking at:
a.) DB-01 dime wah crybaby from hell b.) KH95 wah kirk hammett c.) Dunlop 535Q d.) Zakk Wylde wah
i read reviews on the original crybabys, fasel inductor crybaby and slash wah and i've heard they are all terrible (i watched the slash wah videos on youtube and honestly i think it does fall short... maybe a youtube video doesn't do justice but the other wahs above sounds amazing on the videos!) so i did not include those three... sorry if that offends anyone
thanks, cheers! |

| is the Dunlop 535Q the one with the adjustable knob on the side, i've heard good things about that. I use the boss wah, its alright after I modded it to make the sweep wider. |

| I disagree with the crybaby being terrible. I have one and, if you are just looking for new sounds, believe me, you really don't need that 535Q. But it's your decision of course, just my opinion... |

I have a stock dunlop crybaby about 10 years old...personally i just need simple wah without all the mini switches and pots on it..
As far as i was aware Slash uses the Dunlop rack unit crybaby and not a normal wah pedal.... |

I don't really like conventional 'crybaby' type wahs, I just find them really annoying and always turn them on/off by mistake......
My favourite wah is actually the FT-2, thats a really sweet pedal..... |

Go any try a few is your best bet..don't believe everything you read/see on the net and youtube, there are people out there especially on HC that any piece of gear with Boss written on it must be crap...!! and remember to ask yourself how much you will use this effect and how much you really want to spend..i use my Wah for a few songs and basically when i feel like it will add something to a song... remember with the artist signature pedals you are getting something they designed for a particular artist and their personal setup, all the players you have mentioned are players who use a high gain sound all the time so i don't know what way they designed the sweep of the pedal to suit themselves and their rig..it might not work for you....!! plus with a 'name' on it,it will probably be a lot more expensive than a stock pedal...Slash would sound like Slash with an ordinary wah and a LP copy and a solid state marshall... i've never used one but the Vox 847 is also a very popular wah pedal which was used by Hendrix and Clapton that might be worth checking out if you budget allows... |

Kirk Hammett also used an old Vox wah on the Black Album. It's even rumoured to be have belonged to Jimi, go figure. Anyway, it sounds great on Enter Sandman for example.
I also like the Morley wahs with the opto circuit, the Steve Vai model (Bad Horsie) is an awesome pedal for instance.
Have fun annoying music store staff with your wah tryouts |

tried some out... i'd have to say that i really like the sound of:
a.) the Kirk Hammett KH95 Wah with the famed metallica EQ settings, nice metallic green finish. Doesn't have much features but seems more stable (NO buttons and knobs to break) and a little clearer than the DB-01. Very kewl sound, seems to be most clearest sounding wah out of all the ones i've tried. sells for $159.99
b.) the Dime crybaby from hell DB-01 which has alot of features to custom tailor your sound (3 EQ mini knobs and 1 big Q-sweep knob for variable sweep sounds like the 535Q) and sweep and a really cool boost button which actually does something! Camo paint design. Sells for $149.99 USD
i wouldn't really worry about custom tailoring my wah sound tho so i don't know, but it's 10 dollars cheaper
i tried the EVH95 Van Halen wah, it was kewl but something i would never get just because it's more of a mid-sweep... i like the grinding low's and biting highs (minus the annoying break of some wah when in the toe down position) |

That's what I use and I too like it too. The keeley modded true bypass version is only $169. I think the true bypass is the only mod on that version for that price. There are other options here....

I needed a wah for a couple of new songs that we added to our set - went into my local music store, bought a bog-standard Jim Dunlop Cry Baby and it does the job. Never let me down and nothin' fancy plus it's cheap compared to the signature models around the place.
Maybe try one and you might be surprised that simple & basic is the best. |
