I did the Full Tone drive II conversion mod and couldn't believe how great it made the pedal sound.

Its a pretty flexable pedal to mod, seeing as the layout is similar to other pedals out there either by the big names or boutique/mod makers.
There's the TS series, Langraff, Fulltone, MRX ZW44, Clay Jones, Lovetone, Monte Allums, Keeley, Indy, OD1 conversion, Blackmarket, Vodkamods, and on and on...

Depends on what sound your going for with the pedal in mind.
More/less bass, more crunch, pronounced/scooped mids, transparent or in yur face
I have three SD1s, one is stock MIJ, OD1 conversion with six clipping options, and the third is close to a ZW44 that's still a work in progress.

I had a Keeley SD-1 but sold it. It was okay. I also had a stock SD-1 and sold that too. I'm not a really big fan of the SD-1 unless it is in front of a Marshall JCM or JMP head and 4x12 cab.

SD-1 mods vary a TON...

i wouldn't say there's a best because it depends on what you want it to do.

some mods will turn it into more of a dirt box, others will limit the gain potential to only being a booster for a tube amp. some will add more bite.

my personal favorite is the fulldrive 2 conversion, which i also recommended to darrin. adds a bunch of clarity and a ton of crunch.

the 5-star mod has less gain potential than a stock SD-1.

any mod that involves swapping the op amp to a JRC4558D from the stock chip will increase bite but decrease fuzz.

IMHO, the best SD-1 mod is from AnalogMan (his Silver mod, but keep the Boss-style asymmetrical clipping)... I was able to retire my much-beloved and well-worn MIJ SD-1 in favor of a modded recent MIT SD-1.

The Technology of the Tube Screamer is good reference to modding your own SD-1 to taste
