I purchased a Boss Tr-2 on evil-bay purely on a whim, typical GAS striking again. It was too good a price to turn down though, pretty much brand new MIT TR-2 Tremolo for 26.
I got it today and instead of studying (of course) I spent a few hours getting better acquainted with it, and I like it. I rather enjoyed the sound of it set very deep and choppy, mixed with a phaser.
Does anyone have any tricks or combinations they like to use with their TR-2's?
Also I'm not sure if it's just my ears or something, but does anyone agree that it is almost too subtle? I don't mean that you can't get any extreme sounds out of it, because you can but don't you think that, all dials set around straight up it's not all that noticeable really, and that to get useable sounds you generally need to have one setting quite high. Perhaps I'm just not much of a fan of subtle effects, I guess when I step on something I want people to KNOW that I've activated something crazy |

| Mix your phaser and tremolo in a LS2, put both pedals in its seperate loop (phaser A, trem B) |

my fav trick was putting it back in the box...yeah i said it...
in my defense it was on my board for a few months and it did the job but, idk...something just felt lacking to me...i think it had to do with trying it after trying the EH Pulsar which is a vastly superior unit to me...if only for the more options it has not so much the quality, cause in terms of quality the TR-2 is class...
i enjoyed just having it on with deep chop and delay set at diff speeds with heavy regeneration...
and i agree, way too subtle unless it's clean...but sometimes it's cool if you want those sort of undertones... |

I use the TR-2 on my 'board and i agree it is a subtle effect..i also have built in tremolo on my '61 selmer, which as far as i know is the bias tremolo that actually messes with a valve to get the effect...i also have a it on my 70's musicman amp and its a much more extreme effect...to me the TR-2 is right in between..it has the subtle shimmer of the selmer with a bit of the extremness of the musicman if needed....i love using it with a slight bit of dirt from my overdrive with a bottleneck for ry cooder type paris,texas/missisippi type sounds.....even though i don't use it all the time ..it ain't goin' nowhere.... |

Jaymz:
There's a few easy mods that can be done to make the effect more apparent. i agree that it's very subtle when it's stock but also gives a nice lil volume cut (or at least the appearance of one).
switching out the R9 resistor makes the effect much more noticeable.
boss has a 10k resistor in there. 6.8k supposedly is the unity value. i put a 4.7k and now i get a lil boost when i step on the effect and it's a lot more noticeable. i plan on switching to a 6.8k as it's now a little too "in your face."
it's not the best tremolo pedal on the market, but it's not terrible if you get it set up right. |
