Today I went to the pawnshop and bought a SD-1. While I was there, I ran into an old friend that I haven't seen for years. He is a Bass player and he says that his old lady plays the button accordion and that they play a lot of Zydeco. He wants me to come and jam, but I don't know many of the songs, as he is of French-Canadian descent and I am not. So far the best that I can do is Mary Chapin Carpenter's Down At The Twist And Shout and of course Jambalaya by the Hank. Is anyone into this? I would like to hear some more stuff before I go, so I am sort of looking for a list of favorites. |

...some irish dudes.......!! only the legend that was rory gallagher one of the best guitar players to ever come out of the emerald isle..... zydeco would come pretty naturally to anyone interested in irish trad music as a lot of the instruments and rootsy feel is similar..i wouldn't be surprised if the french settlers who first brought it to canada came from brittany, the part of france who claim descent from the celts....the scots would be pretty comfortable with zyceco as well i would imagine...a few pints of guinness and some uisce beatha(irish for whiskey it means water of life)..and you will be grand... ..just bring that big gibbo acoustic and belt it out... .. ..

Not that this is going to help you directly but generally speaking it's a lot of blues based material.
I had to learn 5 CD's worth of material for a band playing Zydeco & similar forms of music, and that was my experience.
Fun stuff to play BTW. |

Ha Ha I thought that you would get a kick out of that Franzoni. I went over on the weekend, and you are indeed right Zestystrat, I had a gas. I took the Dove with me, but next time I'll have to take my LP because you cant hear the accoustic. She has an electric accordian, a ROLAND! She plays it through a Fender 212 solidstate amp. I didn't even know Roland made accordians, but it sounds good. She paid over four thousand dollars for it! Our version Zydeco is a lot like Bluegrass, with the sqeezebox playing the fiddle parts. My friends are leaving for Quebec this week for a month, so we'll get together again then. |

The only difference between that roland accordian and a regular one is that the roland would probably take longer to burn......... seriously there was a shop at the end of my street that gave accordian lessons and listening to them rehearse put me off irish trad music for years.... only when i got older and started listening to people like richard thompson/rory gallagher that i realized you could use your strat or les paul along side the accordian.....that peavey and the les paul might be a good move.....mark knopfler did some stuff with sonny landreth off his first album and they were trading licks...franch/cajun thing going on....... |
