A friend gave me his old Octave pedal (OK, more like permanant loan). I was psyched to have another Boss on my pedal board, but it's turned out to be disappointing. I've fiddled around with it, and I can't really see any use for it. The two lower tones just seem to muddy up your sound, and audio-wise, they feel like formless blobs of sound. BUT, a lot of people own this pedal, so I get the feeling I must be missing something here--I'm really hoping that I just don't 'get' it.
So, my question to you guys who know so much about Boss' wares, is to please give me an example of how or why you'd use this pedal, so that I can try it out and hopefully understand the appeal of the Octave. Can anyone point me in the right direction with this little brown box?

The classic use is with fuzz for single note leads. Experimenting with effected signal only (turn the clean level all the way down) can generate very synth-like tones, or washes of thunderous brown noise (like white noise, but deeper, like a waterfall).

Or you can be the White Stripes.

I use it to play "What you're doing" from the first Rush album. Bass and guitar plays the same pretty much all the way through so all you need is a drum track and you're there

i found the OC-2 pretty useless but if you play a repetitive line high on the guitar (E and B strings) with it you get a nice enough synth sound but you're better off going with a pitch shifter. they've tonnes more versatility

Put the OC-2 fist in your chain and play as precise as you can, let it fatten up distortion or Fuzz sounds as some of the other people have mentioned before.

I really like it when you use it in some section of your solos, so it creates that much more exhitement. Listen to some Zep, Jimmy Page used it is that way as well.

True the OC-2 will not work with chords, the OC-3 does, but personally I prefer the sound of the OC-2.

Good thing is all of them sound different as well, I do have a few and some tend to have more bass than the others.

It is not really a pedal you would have on all the time in a song, like a reverb for example, but still it is a great one to add some extra spice.

Just experiment and be patient and you will find a use for it.

Hi Guys
While I don't have an OC-2.
Here's a neat trick, I use now & again.

I use a pitch shifter, set for one octave down, & an overdrive pedal,
when I play some of my SLIDE solos.

Remember to mix in, some of the original unprocessed guitar sound.
A compressor, at the start of the chain will keep things in check.

Now that's some BIG FAT serious sound,
it'll make all the players in the audience, sit up & take notice.....

It's also a great setting for when you have to practice by yourself at home.
Try throwing in a bit of Reverb and-or Delay.

cool idea. i used a whammy to play some slide solos before. anyone with a pitch shifter should try it. it can sound horrible and a bit like a old school computer loggin on to the internet but you can get usable sounds out of it too!!
