First thing to get off my chest, I'm not a metal player nor do I like metal. But I currently use an MD-2 for heavy impro solos and most importantly, muse songs. (my band like to cover them a lot).
And I was looking at distortions pedals which are heavier than my Shredmaster but don't sound like a bee trapped in my amp. So I've been looking at the EHX Metal Muff and it sounds pretty sweet. Has anybody had any experiences with it? Do you think it would nail the Bellamy distortion? (I'm talking about the non FF stuff btw)
Cheers guys

...was talking to JD from The Sword a few yrs ago and he spoke highly of the Metal Muff...so I ran out and grabbed one up and fell in love w/ it at first...but after a few days of tinkering I came to the conclusion that it had that "can o' bees" sound to it just like every single high gain stomp box i've ever ran across...IMHO you'll never find a box that beats a good ole tube monster cranked to the tits ...then again I freakin despise that proto-metal scooped sound...call me old skool but...if you don't mind 0 mids then check her out...in the end it's your opinion that really counts when it comes to what you like. |

What about messing around with an XT-2 or a PW-2? I also have a Danelectro Black Paisley Liquid Metal that I quite like. Not too familliar with the Muse stuff (just the popular stuff really) so I'm not sure of the exact sound you are looking for. All good pedals though... |

I agree, this is a good suggestion from DasBeef...
Also try using an XT-2 or PW-2 and your MD-2 blended together. you'll get a metal sound with some good harsh mid to fill in that "bee" sound you're talking about... It may give you a rough approximation of Matt Bellamy's (awesome) tone.
I like my MT-2 to be rounded out with an XT-2 and maybe even a DS-1 in front to boost the signal. An NS-2 will come in very handy with all that high gain.

I got a cheap deal on a second hand nano Metal Muff. The sound is a little fixed as it only has volume and gain and a 3 way tone scoop. With this pedal either you like it or you don't, i do. a much more versatile pedal in the same price range is ofcourse the mt-2. I love my XT-2 but i don't think it will get the sound your thinking of.
Wait your telling me there are Muse songs which arent drenched in fuzz? |

The one time I ever heard a guitarist play with such a pedal, he did sound like there was a bee trapped in his amp. He even used an NS-2 to keep it quiet. Most of us didn't like it very much, but offcourse you be the judge. There is however a guy on youtube who makes it sound pretty good.

This may come off jerky but if you don't want the buzzy why go with a fuzz/muff variant? You need to go in another direction. Even the Rat which is part dist part Fuzz/Muff would be closer then a Muff.
I'm not aware of Muse so I can't tell you what to get to sund like them but thats not where I'd be looking. |

Check out some of the Blackstar stuff (or seymour duncan do a heavier sounding version of my twin tube overdrive pedal....) they have a real preamp valve and run on 300 volts..i'm looking at their clean booster as a possible replacement for my CS-3..they also make some pretty cool looking distortion pedals and amps..... i'm with Brut on the cranked amp thing but for my needs i find a tube/valve overdrive comes the closest i've found to running an amp flat out and avoiding the 'bumblebee in a jar' syndrome..... |

Franz you a legend!
I looked up the Blackstar Ht-Distx, and true to their slogan, it is the sound in my head. It sounds a bit like a Deziel VH4, what Matt Bellamy uses for his normal distortion.
I'll have to pick one up soon, I have just won a mint pedaltrain pro HC in the UK so looks like im broke for a while |

ollie, have u tried the current marshall jackhammers, very defined realistic overdrive, quite responsive too, oh and its got a s**load of gain.
but i too recomend blackstar, i tried one of their HT-5 heads and it was a monster, beautiful drive sounds.
