a brief update: first, if the seller is behaving like a belligerent a**hole, then eVILbay's SquareTrade "mediation" service is an utter waste of your time and money.
secondly, today I received a pedal from a different seller who packaged it in a properly-sized USPS Priority Mail box, and was immensely pleased. |

hey, i was wondering if, before you bought a pedal from that loser, if there was any warning sign the that the guy was a prick? anything at all??? low feedback score/newbie, neutral feedbacks, small dollar sales etc; I sure would like to know... |

the seller claimed he used to operate a studio. I wrongly assumed that meant he knew his way around 1/4" jacks, instrument cables, and 9V batteries. (silly f**kin' me!)
FWIW, the seller had 150+ positive feedbacks. there were also a few negative feedbacks in his profile, that should have warranted more consideration in retrospect, but nothing *recent* that screamed 'avoid'.
and finally, if he posts anything else fx/gear-related for auction, I'll 'out' him here, even though that would also out me. |

I'm currently in a strange situation. I won a Dod pedal, 20. But the seller uses a false account to make his auctions go higher. It's so obvious it's funny... The fake account has only a 3 feedback, bids on EVERY item the seller has to sell, and 2 items he won are allready (1 day after the end of auction) relisted.
So the right price for my Dod pedal should be 17 rather than 20. Plus, he's willing 8 instead of 5 for shipping. That makes 28 rather than 22. 6 difference. Nothing serious.
BUT thi is a matter of principle. I mailed him, asking to pay the right price. I don't have any news.
What would you do ? |

basstyra, I'd report that mendacious s.o.b. to eBay. the rules against shill bidding can't be different here vs. there:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/tutorial/sbiddingtutorial/intro.html
the downside is, you probably would not be able to complete the transaction at any price, as eBay is usually pretty good at shutting down such sellers. (I wouldn't trust the seller anyway, though.) |

The guy answered, and is ok. So I payed him, the right price (22). That's better for me, it's a good old FX-55B distortion, with original box and so on.
I may report him anyway... |

one final update... after PayPal decided the pedal was 'significantly as described' (even though it did not work), and SquareTrade 'mediation' proved to be an utter waste of time, eBay's protection program actually decided the case in my favor. I was able to 'prove' (circumstantially?) that the pedal was damaged in transit due to the seller's p!ss-poor packing, and also showed that the seller should have known better. (but to be sure, the seller's smugness and arrogance about his 'day job' -- he claims to be an expert on USPS insurance claims -- probably aided my case.)
anyway, it seems that I'll be getting back about $20 (after the $25 deductible), which means that if I can repair the pedal, I might come close to breaking even financially, relative to the auction's final sale price (but of course, a headache that lasts for over 3 months is much more expensive than that).
so to recap, for those who likewise get screwed over by some unscrupulous seller:
- the PayPal 'buyer protection program' actually does more to protect the seller than the buyer, but it's pretty much your only first step if the seller can't be bothered to accept responsibility for their negligence/incompetence
- SquareTrade is a waste of time and $ if the seller is a behaving like an @ss
- ebay's 'standard purchase protection' claim is your last resort, short of the better business bureau and legal authorities, but was surprisingly more user friendly and easier to provide documentation (e.g., 14 days to provide documentation instead of 10; a toll-free fax number to submit paperwork, both unlike PayPal)
'good night, and good luck.'

Hi pawnshop_trash I'm glad your 3 month headache, sort of sorted itself out, let me know if I can help you fix the pedal in any way.
Just last week I paid $40AU for postage, that came to $16.20, on the box, I called the pawn broker seller in Sydney Aust. & asked if he would consider a partial refund of the difference, in the postage, he bluntly refused & would not even enter into any discussion about it. He sent it domestic post, not priority next day of courier? He stated that he had to pay someone, to pack it? ($23.80AU)
He claimed that I agreed to pay the $40AU & then hung up.
While I'm still annoyed with his attitude, I came out WAY in front. I purchased (5) faulty Items from him, That now all work, I will post up a list in the New pedals acquired thread.
Which pedal was it pawnshop_trash? I lost track of the thread.
Regards Dr. Bob

if you can follow these 8 simple rules, you will be feeling better in no time.
I'd go straight to #8. Ebay and paypal couldn't care less (personal experience)...
Take another 50$ - by beer for 'em - drink 'em and you'll feel alot better.. |

Ive only had to deal with paypal like that once.
I bought a guitar neck off ebay, and it never came.
At the same time, the guy had 5 other paypal arguements about not recieving their stuff, so we all got full refunds. I havent seen the seller around since then. |

Dr. Bob, it was an old DOD pedal, the original design, with a notoriously fragile footswitch ('it's a feature, not a flaw!). but if I can repair it, the pedal will be back on eBay shortly thereafter. (I had since ordered a new switch from DOD/Digitech; we'll find out soon whether my soldering skills are up to snuff.)
and I likewise really f*ckin' hate when sellers overcharge for postage. if a U.S. seller charges $12-$15 to ship a pedal within the U.S., it better be packed really well and arrive in 1-2 days. recently, two different sellers charged a lot for postage on a pedal, but gosh! was it swift -- as close to immediate gratification as you can get on eBay, so no complaints. a third seller overcharged by 50% and apparently put the extra $$ I paid for insurance in their pocket... schmucks. and a fourth seller charged $13 for shipping, but apparently cannot ship anything until a week after the PayPal payment clears. grrr... but those are just minor annoyances. and as Jawbreaker said, "anything that can go wrong will find itself come and gone"....
cheers, and good night! |

Hi pawnshop_trash On the up side, I have 5 (now) working pedals that I didn't have.
He cynically asked me if I got any of the crap going, I told him it all worked, straight out of the box, a sort of sweet quick thinking revenge.
Well, you should have heard the tirade of "F Words" He thought & was convinced, that he had sold me a box of useless crap.
He said he had it all tested & it was all FAULTY!!!!
I calmly repeated, that I just plugged it all in, & it ALL WORKED. More "f-Words" and then he Slammed the phone down.
Honest truth, is that it took me about 3 hours to fix & clean.
Regards Dr. Bob
