G'day I've just added an ODB-3 to my setup and i wondering what some of you bass playing fellows think of this pedal? Seems to get a bit of a love it/hate it rap on the net.
I haven't played it in a real gig situation yet but will on Sunday. My setup is P-Bass>ODB3>CH-1>MXR M-80>SWR amp. The ODB-3 is a pretty full-on distortion pedal. I found the Natural Over Drive setting in the manuel, Bal full, Gain nil, still really distorted sounding. The OD setting I'm liking is Bal 1, Gain 1 EQ to taste, it gives me just a smidge of OD. I'm finding it easy to get a full on fuzz Bal 3, Gain 4. I'm sure once i kick it in with the band I'll have a better idea. Mav

i love distorted bass but the you have to make sure the dist doesn't become bigger than the bass sound itself. it should still be the low freq of the bass pushing the sound not a wall of distortion!. think of Muse's fuzz bass sound.
i do like the ODB-1 tho. anyone tried it with guitar? |

Very interesting. I found this pedal to have plenty of low end and the treble can be handy for tweeking in some top end grit. |

I had one. You really have to be carefull how much gain and treble you boost and how to set the balance in order to be heard in a band. Especially one with loud guitars and cymbals. I found an old picture of mine, I used these settings:
level: as loud as you need in order to balance the clean and effect sounds. both tone controls pretty much on 12 o'clock balance and gain: both on 9 to 10 o'clock.
The keyword here is to experiment, you can get a nasty fuzz sound from it, as well as a smooth overdrive sound which I think you look for. Maybe this may not be your pedal at all, there are other bass overdrive pedals out there doing a better job for that slight overdriven edgy sound like the Fulltone bassdrive. Btw, isn't your M-80 designed to do that?
Good luck and keep us posted. |

Finally got to try my ODB-3. P-Bass>CS-2>ODB-3>MXR M-80 Amp. Played a loud rock gig in a small venue last night. The verdict? I'm happy with it, i used it as a volume boost/OD, i had the distortion turned way up for a couple of tunes to helped me cut through the mix a little better. I was concerned about having this over the top fuzz sound but with the whole band going for it the ODB-3 just added some fullness and bottom end. BTW i turned all dials to 3 o'clock on the CS-2 a got a beautiful tight slightly overdriven/distorted sound which i"m really happy with. Mav. |
