Sounds like a good deal Neaves, I'd even pay 70 Canadian for a PQ-4 |

Well done.... i don't know what sort of music or sound your going for,but a trick i learned with the GE7 is if you boost the mids and pull back on the treble and bass you can get the clapton/slash lead sound.. as far as i know thats what slash does to his MXR grapic eq pedal....'m sure you could do the same with the PQ4 as it has bass, mid and treble controls...with my GE7 i can get my marshall or musicman to give my a very thick lead sound but i mainly use a pedal for overdrive and the GE7 these days for my acoustic and mandolin.... |

The secret of PQ-4 is to use very small adjustments and listen carefully. Start from everything as flat as possible. Think of what you want to happen and get familiar with the pedal. As you understand no setting is the right setting it all depends on the guitar, amp etc etc. You can put it behind an overdrive or distortion pedal and sculpture the sound of the OD. When you master PQ-4 you have much more powerful tool than a graphic EQ. PQ-4 makes a really nice booster.

| I'm real excited to play with it. Lately these pedals on ebay have been going for like 100 bucks usd so i got a pretty good deal especially considering the production numbers bossarea has displayed on a previous post. 15,000 worlwide approx right?-eeeek. I had a ge-7 and had no luck with it on my dirt channel but it was useful for the clean channel but my dirty channel is more important right now so i sold the pedal. I may buy a fender amp for my clean channel. So Goran my pedal chain order would be Wah,PQ-4,Keeley modded SD-1,SD-2,AC-2 right? |

There is no rules where to place PQ-4, but its very wise to put it after your wah. Before or after OD, try for yourself, both have their advantages.

| I'd try to use it at the end of the chain to sculpt the final tone. |

| yup, EQ is usually used towards the end of the chain. usually after distortion too but depending on your set up, you might want it to go before modulation. i personally use it after distortion and modulation, but before time effects such as delay or reverb. |

For a while I had two PQ-4 and tried using one before and one after OD/Distortion, you could dial in a very good sound by this. I did this more out of experimental lust than practical use. I think this could be really good if you are presented to a new amp in some situation. I didnt find this out by myself, read somewhere that somebody was using EQs this way and tested it.

Yeah Goran! I have heard of that too where they use it to before the amp distortion and then after it to realy sculpt the sound. I have been wanting to try that ever since i heard about it but i doubt it will be any time soon that i get another pq-4 to actually do it. I recently switched from solid state to tube and there is a big difference in gain and sound everything is different now but one plus is that my g majors effects are much clearer than they were with my peavey. I have been struggling with tone issues for about 6 months and now find myself severly chasing tone. |

I've been chasing tone for quite some time as well. I must say that with the purchase of my new Mesa Boogie amp, the very limited time I've had the pleasure of spending with it already has reinforced my belief that a mess of pedals only cruds up the mix. I'm not talking about tone-suckage, buffering circuits, or multi-layered overdrive boosts into distortion on flanged phasers through pitch-shifted wah-delays etc.
Consider how many tone controls there are in your chain. Include signal coloration by knobs that aren't specificially labeled Bass, Treble, Mid, Fat, Muscle, Presence, High, Low, & Frequency. Every knob that modifies the signal: Sweep, Rate, Level, Mix, etc. colors the resulting output. Couple that idea with the endless cascades of pedals into pedals & one finally concludes that the endless variation of frustrating possibilities exist that is almost insurmountable in seeking that perfect tone for which we all strive.
My guitar, my pedals, my amps, my mixer... all have tone controls. Are they working together or are they fighting each other & lowering the S/N ratio? How to best set them ALL & in what combinations? If you set the best tone with pedals that are on, what happens if you turn one off & add two more into play? What a nightmare. Perhaps we should set them all to unity & run a PQ-4 or GE-7 at the end of the line to simplify things & increase consistency.
Bottom-line: Keep it simple. Take advantage of multiple loops. Buy a LS-2 or two. If you aren't satisfied at the very basic tone from your guitar to your amplifier w/o effects, then how in the hell is a buttload of effects going to help? I'm slowly realizing the obvious. I'm using a lot less pedals simultaneously now & only for subtle effect. I don't need guitar-jets swooshing & diving all about while speaking vocal "oohs" & "ahhs". I'm trying to get back to a basic vintage guitar sound, ya know? Sure, slight stereophonic ambience creates a rich, lush presence but endless bouncing delays through sewer pipes & distorted mush just isn't cutting it anymore. Think clarity, subtlety; clean things up a bit.
I hope this helps focus a few of you guys. I got all wrapped up in my pedal collection & as proud as I am in my materialistic ways, we must learn to use them judiciously & with meaningful effectiveness.
All said, I wish I had a PQ-4 as I really like Parametric EQs. |

Hi DeFrag
Welcome to the converted, it just takes some longer than others. I too like to keep my setup as simple as possible.
With your new Friend from Mesa, you will even notice, the difference in tone, that you get from a Short cable verses a long cable. And even the quality of various cable will become apparent.
There are many time, when I use my special 6 foot lead, & only that lead, straight into my Fender 75, & like yourself, It's Very close to Tone Heaven.
That's about as simple as I can get it, I have even tried this into my Mesa 50-50 rack, no preamp, just the guitar into the main amp inputs.
But don't get me wrong, I still love a sonic palette of pedals. But it is always very rewarding to just have your guitar & lead & an amp, oh yeah, and try using your finger more, you will be justly rewarded, with many new found tones.
And feel free, to write to me anytime, about your moments of ZEN with your new amp.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Defrag, youre right for sure. and the louder you crank up, the more lifeless your tone will become with long pedal chains. any time i turn up its either my DS-1 or OD-1 into my EH-2 straight into my amp.
my elaborate setup is for bedroom use.. |
