Multi effects. I don't hate them. I'd just rather stomp on a different colored metal box to get the sounds I want. That being said the next item I buy will likely be a multi. |

I've never really noticed the difference when playing live zerksies, although for most of our set I'm using bucker's with only the occasional coil tap and also a Tele for just one song these days. I guess it's because of the high volume and everything else that's going on at a gig around you (people shouting, drinking, glasses clinking and folk hopefully shaking their booty, etc ).
Certainly, if we were doing a quieter set with slower songs and less instrumentation, to people who are there just to listen and absorb our music, then a noise could be a problem - but we don't do any gigs like that - old school fun-time pub-rock all the way for us
I can see Pedal Dan's point too - we favour overdriven tones and rarely stray into high gain ditsortion, so noise is going to be less pronounced. I know what you mean because when I play non-band stuff and I use the OD2 (red led) channel cranked up on my Marshall JVM the noise is a problem. |

No point in witing all this again as The_Doc has summed up my situation perfectly except for one thing... i use single coils....
Maybe because i grew up listening to Hendrix,Clapton,Beck,Gilmour etc..but the ocassional bit of buzz or hum is not a problem and doesn't bother me..i very rarely have noise issues unless the venue has a really bad earth which usually affects everything and we run a lighting rig with two T bars with four PAR 56 cans on either side of the stage plus two sets of disco lights and the drummer has another two PAR 56'S to light up his drums...my backup strat has a set of Fender vintage noisless pickup that i installed if things get really bad but it's never come to it yet...my regular NO-1 strat('89 USA standard) has the original Fender pickups it came with...
I don't mean to offend anyone here but the noise issue seems to be more of an issue for you guys stateside rather than europe...could it be because you have such a big area to cover with electricity that you have some sort of filtering problems with all the outside interferences....?.. |

They also run at 110 volts on 60Hz, whereas we're running 220 or 230 volts on 50 Hz. Maybe that's got something to do with it? |

We have none whatsoever.
Offcourse, every Marshall hums and hisses on the boost channel and my bass amp hums a little too. But when we're playing it's not noticable anymore. You know how much of that shit gets eaten by loud cymbals?
I tend to notice the fact that guitar players with a noisegate, are usually some of the younger ones, playing some extreme kind of music, using way too much distortion from a "bees in a jar" pedal into some crappy solidstate amp and a way too large pedalboard with pedals, patch cords, adaptors and other things that worsen the noise problems, usually not even in a band but only in their bedrooms.
I love long sentences
Not too piss anyone off, these are just my observations. |

Couldn't imagine using a noise gate... They just sound terrible to me. Slowly loosing interest in my chorus/flanger as well... Actually it's slowly making it's way to my singer area and removing itself from my board...
I really love the wah though! Used to use a Crybaby JM-1, and i didn't use it much because it didn't do what I desired...
But then I got a picture wah! The RMC-4! My lord how it is absolutely amazing! I recommend everyone who hated the wah try one. I fell in love with my wah again, after leaving it unused on the board for so long |

RMC-4 is that the one made by Teese....?
I still have my CE-2 on the board...since i got it it's never been off it as the CH-1 used to be from time to time...i wouldn't use it on everything but at times it gives a great shimmer to the sound for certain parts especially as Dirk pointed out,for any 80's covers..the Police,Pretenders etc.... |

My gates, pedals and processors all have a threshold knob or parameter. When adjusted right, you don't even know they're there... Until you turn them off! By the way Dirk I'm 44 yr's young, and occasionally play live with a TSL100 full stack and a Triple Rec full armor stack. Just sayin' |
