hey guys, this is my very first post on this forum, YAY
i have an opportunity to buy an old DS-1 but wanted to know if the price is right (forgive me if this is the wrong place to post this thread, i'm a noobie).
The inked serial is "9300", which i assume dates it as APRIL 1980. It has a silver screw and a long dash in DS-1. The "D" is DS-1 is underneath the "t" in Distortion. I'd rate the pedals condition as 8.5/10 and it has a black switch, not clear. It's all original and works perfectly.
I can buy it for $140 US... is that too dear or is it a bargain or is it about right?
thanks for any help :) |

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I haven't been monitoring US prices for a while but if the pedal was sold on Ebay UK, the price would have been about right. If it comes with original box and manual it would border a bargain. |

Hey cyberpunk,
That price for a SS DS-1 seems about right.
The average price id say is $150USD |

WHOA! are you serious? i havent been following DS-1s but that seems pricey.
my recommendation is only spend that much if you are REALLY sure you want it. especially since there doesnt seem to be much of a difference between a MIJ and MIT DS-1. (you can get MIT DS-1s for 30-50 USD.) if its just the MIJ DS-1 youre looking for, i suggest finding one WITHOUT Silver Screw as it will probably be cheaper. but again if you are thinking of collecting, you might wanna jump on this one
good luck,
welcome to the forum too! |

thanks for the input guys! i'm still undecided. if this is isn't a bargain then im probably gonna hold out until i do find one for cheap.
i saw an old '78 clear switch DS-1 in mint condition being sold for $500 US on ebay about 3 weeks ago, i thought THAT was insane!
thanks for the welcome :) |

Hi cyberpunk409 Welcome to the Forum It's great to have another Aussie here.
Current price for a brand new from the music shop-dealer is about $78 Aussie dollars. Boss area will attest, that he had 5 new to vintage DS-1's all hooked up at one time, & found it difficult to hear the difference.
There is a real big long Thread here on the forum somewhere. I evend did a comparison chart of all the different Chips used in all the incarnations of the DS-1.
I would suggest that you get yourself a new DS-1 If you really need to have a Vintage Long dash DS-1, look around at stores like CashConv. & pawn brokers. you will find them now & then for less than $90Au. But remember that some dealers know about vintage & mark it up accordingly.
Always listen to the pedal before you buy it, Try to do this with the vintage pedal as well.
Ae you planning to modify it? Then you will be changing the fundamental tone of the pedal, & what's the point, it searching for a vintage pedal.
I have a long dash & a more modern MIT DS-1, I know I'm getting old, but I can't hear the difference. ( No Flame wars guys )
Diggum12 will tell you that one of his sounds sweeter than the other, & I wouldn't argue with him.
Save your money a SS MIJ will fall into your lap, sooner or later. I got one for about $25Au a couple of months ago. Billy Hyde & Alla's have them for $78-79Au.
