I've had a few Eq pedals and not sure which one to settle on. I've always held on to my Boss GE-7, older Japan version. I've also tried MXR 10 band EQ (older blue), Ibanez GE10, and Xotic preamps.

Thinking about switching to something new. Any suggestions?

Also curious to see if you prefer to have the Eq pedal before or after your OD/distortion pedal in the pedal chain.

When I've used an EQ, it has been the MIJ GE-7 after the dirt... Haven't actually tried any others.

Same here...GE-7 after OD/DS for best results.

The Homebrew electronics Detox EQ seems to be really good.
It's the Paul Gilbert signature model and he uses it mainly to create a virtual clean channel with an overdriven tube amp.

I tend not to use eq pedals for live work now - instead, I use Laurie's HZD for a boost / tone hike and rely on the amp eq for my stock tones.

However, in the studio I've had some good results with my GE-6. It's pretty coarse and noisey but it sounds great with a cranked Marshall and a treble-booster. I can get a decent Clapton 'Beano' era tone with a bog-standard Les Paul but I'll have to experiment with the sliders now, as I've never noted down the settings and haven't done any Clapton style material for ages!

Since its an older Japanese version, you could swap out the electro caps for metal film ones to help clean it up.

You could also look into getting a PQ4 Parametric EQ, different type equalizing compared to shelving from a slider type type eq.
Sold my older GE7 after i got my PQ4

Parametric EQs are really under-rated IMHO. I use a PQ-3B for my bass and it does wonders. I haven't tried a PQ-4 for guitar, but if it's half as good as the bass version, it's totally worth getting.

Once you are used to using a Parametric EQ it is a lot easier to get a specific sound to stand out in the mix. With bass they are great for giving you just the right amount of punch.

I like my GE-7b (the old brown one). Works well as a frequency-selective overdrive...

Nice suggestion. I was shopping around for PQ4 and shocked at the inflated price!

I also noticed that Ibanez makes parametric EQs; they're just as expensive, if not more.

Yeah, that's why I don't have one yet
Boss didn't make many because they didn't sell well, probably because parametric EQs are a little harder to get used to than graphic EQs... Once you have figured them out though, they are awesome.
