If Roland/Boss realeased a set of reissue pedals, would they;

A] What ones would be re issued?
B] Would they sell?
C] How many would they manufacture if it was a limited run?
D] How much would you say they would sell for in a shop?

Just a little question ive had in my mind, as i think it would be comercial gold for Roland/Boss to do such a thing.

Whats your thoughts/opinions on this topic???

I'd like to see reissues of the Spectrum and Slow Gear.

DM-2
OD-1
SG-1

I am sure some would like to see a PQ-4 as well.

interesting questions.

we had discussed something similar on a different thread a couple of weeks ago (although i'm sure it has been talked about before then). as for the pedals, i consider a few to have been reissued since there are a few models that were in production and then were unavailable in the USA for a few years before being brought back. the OD-3, OS-2 and DS-2 are a couple of examples of that.

A)
if i could hand pick boss reissues it would be based upon pedals i wish other people could play without having to dig so hard for them:
CE-2, OD-1, DM-2/DM-3, PH-1, etc. as i feel they are better sounding than contemporary versions of those types of effects. possibly even an HM-2.

the other pedals would be the collector's pedals that had low production runs and/or have difficult to find chips. SG-1, SP-1, VB-2, DC-2, DC-3, etc.

from a usability standpoint, some of the pedals like the PQ-4.

B)
they may or may not sell depending upon the price and how boss would choose to market them along with their current production run pedals. bringing out a CE-2 reissue would probably ruin a lot of push invested in the CE-5 and CH-1.

C)
there has to be a minimum production run size to make it worthwhile to do them at all. the more you make of one, the cheaper it is to make them in terms of circuit board, components, printed materials, etc. i would guess 10,000 = minimum based upon their previous production numbers.

D)
if they charge drastically more than the current stock pedals they would have people second guessing the current (and future) pedals of a similar variety as to which is "better" because more expensive should = better right? if they charge a lot less than the current stock pedals they can take sales away from their current pedals that have money invested in R&D. if they charge the same amount... it's a tossup. so, my guess would be a similar price to the current production pedals.

with all that being said... there are three things to keep in mind.

-the reissues must hold up soundwise compared to the originals or they risk tarnishing their legacy.
-they can't convince the public that less is more or they risk future sales of future pedals that there is probably being money invested in for R&D as we speak. e.g. 2 knob ce-2 chorus vs. 5 knob ce-5 chorus, if people believe the 2 knob ce-2 is superior for its simplicity and overall tone, they increase the necessary sound quality of the CE-6 and/or may hurt their chances of adding more user control and still being appealing. similarly, a DM-2 reissue is like admitting that the DD-7's analog mode isn't good enough.
-the parts must be readily available. this would eliminate a good chunk of pedals including the analog delays and VB-2.

with those things being said i believe the possible reissues would likely be specialized pedals that have something that the other pedals don't have. a few reissues i could foresee as possible:
DF-2, PQ-4, SG-1, DC-2 and pedals of that nature that do not have a similar product to compete with.

Hi ESPImperium, Zentropa, Gizzorge, danomite64 & guys

Really good picks & valid points.

But please don't forget the Humble EH-2.
Lots of people, queitly use this pedal, but never talk or boast about it.

I also would like to see the HM-3 return, even if it was in smaller quantities.
The HM-2 & HM-3 were under appreciated in their heyday.

And even though it frustrates me no end at times, the MZ-2 was a pedal before its time as well.

Like most of us here the "classic collectibles" would be nice to have.
But how much would this strategy devalue the classics that we are all chasing, & some are lucky enough to own.

A good example is the Ibanez re-released AD-9 analog 300mS delay, they are Asking-selling it at $249au.

Same goes for the reissue TS9 tube screamer, & it doesn't have the original parts in it, as they claim.
This was Zentropa's comment about making sure it used original spec components & didn't sound inferior.

Would I/we buy a reissue SG-1 - VB-2 - DM-2 - PQ-4's even if they did sound inferior?
Sadly, human nature & the collectability factor says, the answer is:
Probably.

That's my 2 cents worth.
Regards Dr. Bob

The HM-3 is like a reissue HM-2, I have both and I hear very little difference between the two, although I haven't A/B'ed them yet. I must dig them out of the cabinet and give it a try.

Right,
It was my suggestion as well, not so much difference can be heard...

cheers

I think this is the biggest hurdle to any re-issues - Boss would not want to give the pedal-buying public the impression that some of their older pedals were better or more sought-after than their current releases, even though this is patently true...

I think this is possibly the main reason for not doing it..also the cost of setting up the manufacturing process, retooling etc...some of these old pedals i would imagine were assembled by people vs machines and as zentropa pointed out some of the older chips and components may not be available .. i for one would like the see a real analog delay back...maybe boss should open a custom shop ala fender and gibson etc to give some choice to peole if they want to pay over the odds for vintage reissue...how far do you go...?? i.e NOS vs slightly aged, closet classic, well gigged etc.....

Some intresting responces there.

I personally would like to see a series of 10 pedals re issued, with say 10,000 of each say. The ones id like to see reissued are:

OD-1
CE-2
DM-2
OC-2
PH-1
PH-1r
PQ-4
SD-2 ???
SG-1
CS-2

For one, id like to see boss sell more analogue pedals, but al;so reissue a small ammount of "Classic", "Vintage" and "Collectors" pedals. Even if they were a reasnoble ammount of say arround Ģ15-25 more than their modren counterparts id gladly pay for one, even if they were "tonaly inferior" to their older name1sakes.

The only thing i think may be stopping Boss/Roland realeasing the reissues is posibly the RoHs regulations in the EU, with some of the older pedals having components that do not comply with the RoHs laws in the EU.

I'd personally like to see a return to some of the analog-based effects, not more COSM. A DM-series delay and an updated VB-2 would sell like crazy, and rightfully so. I think that the chances of a VB-3 or something wouldn't be too out of the question.

All of those pedals, with the exception of the SG-1 and DM-2, have a current equivalent model that Boss really have to think is superior. They'll never go back to making analogue modulation pedals (shame), there are a dozen or more OD pedals in their range now (far too many to compete with a re-issue of a poor seller like the SD-2), and there is an OC-2 mode included in the OC-3.

I can see the point of re-issuing something like the Slow Gear because they're so raer, and there is no contemporary version in the Boss compact range. I can also see the value (for Boss) in capturing some of the analogue delay market with an "new" DM-2, but to be honest, things like the EHX DMM or Ibanez's analogue delays have a much better reputation than the DM-2/3 in the wider pedalgeek universe(I know it's heresy...)

Boss will never do straight re-issues, they'll only ever do "modern updates" like the recent RE-20, or the "DM-2"/analogue mode on the DD-7: The DD-7 in particular looks like being incredibly successful, and rightly so - It's an example of Boss innovating like they always have done.

I'd like Boss to COSM model their own classic pedals. If they're not going to reissue analogue modulation pedals like the CE-2 and PH-1, then they can at least follow the RE-20's lead and put out a digital version that they're confident in giving the classic name.

A]- OD-1
- DM-2
- DM-3
- PH-1R
- CE-2
- CS-2

B] Well, there are two faces of the coin: Boss Maniacs like us would buy them. But we must check if they really sound like the older pedals. The other side is that everybody knows that the "new generation" of guitar players (most of them EMOS), they donīt know anything about stomp box pedals. They will not care and they donīt know how to use them. The new generation only cares about DS-1 cuz of Kurt Cobain. DM-2 for them is like me, a real hard rock lover playing Samba: What is this??? So I think that most of the buyers are gonna be Boss Maniacs.

C] There are a lot of Boss Maniacs around the world so, I think that... 20,000? Did I exaggerate?

D] They would sell a lot here in Here in Rio de Janeiro at least in one store I know where TRUE musicians buy their gear.

My thoughts are that they would get a lot of money and make us happy!

Well, they built an emulation of both CE-1 and DC-2/3 into the CE-20, which are/were arguably more sought after than the CE-2. Maybe they also thought the CE-1 and CE-2 were a little too similar to put both into their twin pedal, and plumped for the rarer example.

I agree about the need for a better phaser from Boss - I think the PH-3 is pretty awful - Some previous posters have suggested a combined trem/phase/panning/flange/chorus/vibrato twin pedals modelled on older (analogue) Boss compact stomps: A sort of uber-modulation pedal, if you like, taking in TR-2/PN-2/VB-2 etc.... a great idea if you ask me.

I have a PH-1r, PH-2 and PH-3, and I was comparing them recently. The PH-3 does the weird sounds well, and all the added things like the Rise/Fall/Step modes are good fun. The 10 and 12 stage phasers are probably as good as the PH-2, but the 4 stage phaser is poor, and nowhere near the PH-1r. It's not that the sound quality is weak, it's just that it's impossible to get the depth set correctly. It does a strange double-dip at the end of the cycle when the depth is set to maximum, and on lower depth settings it sounds like it's phasing the wrong frequencies. Maybe it needs a "Manual" control, like on the Flangers, to set the centre point of the sweep?
