A friend of mine is giving me an old combo tube amp. It's called a "Lero" and he thinks it's about 12 - 15W. It uses 2 - 12ax7's and 2 - 6v6's. Anyway, he says the cab is pretty beat and it needs a new speaker (the original is missing). I know I have to find the right load speaker and I think I can do that, but do you have any recommendations for size? For construction method/ materials for the cabinet? I'd like to make a unique custom amp using the best methods and materials possible! |

I was going to do that with my old Peavey Bandit, but I decided that it was still to good. I have a rackmount mixer that I was going to put in the space where the amp was, but a rackmount EQ is another good option. Sometimes you can find used rackmount gear cheap, I only paid five bucks for the mixer at a yard sale. |

Hi 4evrnewB
Does the amps output transformer have more than one speaker impedance tap.
A lot of of old valve amps have multiple impedance taps, if it does, see if they are marked in any way 4-8-16 or 8 & 16
As 8 & 16 Ohms was very common on old amps. Sometimes they marked the 16 ohm tap 15, similar thing.
Regards & Good luck with he Celestion.

You STILL could do that to your Bandit. Solder in & mount a 1/4" jack to your speaker lugs & you can keep the combo & run the speaker as an open-backed cab too! (Just not at the same time). Versatile no? Easy as pie as well. |

If only it had a 16ohm speaker instead of 8ohm speaker I would have done it in a similar fashion. When my new cab arrives with the 16ohm speaker arrives, I plan on adding a jack to the amp speaker so I can have the combo, or the cab, or both. This should give me a chance to compare the celestion to the peavey blue marvel as well. |
