Hello,
Noticed this last night while setting up.
I have an old DS-2, BD-2, CE-5 and a RV-5. Im in Florida, so its getting pretty hot down here. Last night I was plugging all the pedals in and hit the DS-2 to check it. The light did not come on and, while plugged in to the guitar and amp, did not allow any audio to pass through. Guitar direct to amp worked fine. All pedals are powered by PSA-120's. Changed out the battery and had no luck.
So, today I checked all the pedals and all but the RV-5 are experiencing the same problem. This is a little upsetting to me, especially with the DS-2, which Ive had for 20 years or so.
Now, all the pedals were in my garage, where it does get a little warm. Would the heat have fried something on the three pedals? Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi pcolageorge, welcome to the forum. I would open them up and give them a good cleaning, especially the jacks and circiut board, with electric contact cleaner. I think that there might be a light type of corrosion on them from the heat and humidity. If that doesn't work, post in the mods and tech forum and I am sure someone there can solve your problem. |

Hi pcolageorge
Welcome to the Forum from Australia.
Post moved to "Modifications and Technical Issues"
I suggest, first of all you just work on one pedal at a time, to minimize confusion.
And as "pedals 4 pv" said, clean the sockets & check the internals. Test each pedal, with a KNOWN GOOD BATTERY.
Do you know of anything else that might have happened? A power surge? Reversed polarity? Anything you might remember. Maybe the PSA-120's went south. Try running the pedals without internal batteries, & just the power supply. Try running the pedals with only the batteries, & just the power supply DISCONNECTED.
Report back, when you can.

Hi pcolageorge,
Welcome to the forum! Never heard this kind of problem. As Bob has written at first everything must be ready on power supply side! It is very suspicious that all your pedals are doing same phenomenon. I am working for an electrinic company and our general temperature specification is among -20 and 60 deg, means all products must work 100% within this range (with many micom ICs and 4-5 kind of different BUS systems, etc...). Becuase BOSS pedals are even more simpler to compare my company's products I do not think that the temperature would be the reason of this "fatal error" with your pedals Inform us about result of your investigation!

Pedals, Dr Bob and ssanyee,
Thank you for all the advice. I have four PSA-120's so Ill give them all a try and swap out batteries, though I have used brand-new batteries in the BD-2 and DS-2 with no luck. Ill head downtown and pick up some contact cleaner today (along with something to loosen the screws on the DS-2). It is very suspicious that three went at the same time. Ill report back on the results.
Thank you/Ksznm szpen again...

Hey guys, This isn't really an answer to the problem but I also noticed the other day a couple of my pedals having problems, my LM-2 wasn't getting enough power it would turn on but the light was very dim. I use a SKB PS-45 board with a built in power supply and I started to notice ugly distortion coming from the pedal, so I went through the chain making sure the power worked on my other pedals and that it wasn't the connector cable. I then tried just a battery and that fixed it, the light was back on full bright and no distortion (the kind you don't want) so my guess is some corrosion is not allowing the power supply to make good contact if anyone has a good tip on how to get inside the PSA input and clean it I would appreciate it. |

The power connector is designed to be "wiped" - what that means is that it needs the input plug inserted and removed periodically otherwise gunk builds up. It isn't broken if it's not working, it's just the "design".
It should come good if you spray the socket with a little contact cleaner and remove and insert the plug a bunch of times (might take 20-30 times to remove all the gunk).

Well, I'm an idiot.
Used a couple of different patch and instrument cables. The cable I was using to test (and I had plugged into the guitar to the pedals on Friday) was the cause of the problem. The pedals are fine... for future reference, do not use a Protel MICROPHONE cable as an instrument cable
Thanks to all for your advice and I look forward to reading the rest of the topics in this forum!

Thanks guys!
I have plenty of instrument cables and wrangle all the mic/speaker cables for the band as well. Somehow, a mic cable that looks like a instrument cable got mixed in. Since I have no mics that take a TRS connection, that cable is a mystery.
Still doesnt explain why the RV-5 worked, but hey, doesnt matter now.
Cheers,
George

Hi pcolageorge
It's good th hear that you resolved the issue.
I hope you stick around the forum a bit, & tell us some of your stories.
What Tweed amp is that? It's difficult to see in your pics.

G'day Dr Bob,
Yep, Im pretty happy it was something stupid that was the problem and not a serious issue :-)
The amp is a Fender Blues Junior I bought. It really helps me get heard while the lead guitar player lets loose with his Gibson Les Paul Classic/Crate combination!
