The Original Boss DD-3 MIJ is the same as the Boss DD-2, however, a keen eye is needed to distinguish Original DD-3 made in Japan from the newer DD-3A.
1. AC adapter receptacle is old large size, protrudes from the back of the pedal casing, AND can be seen from the bottom of the pedal when reading the blue label underneath, ie. there is a cutout in the casing edge (newer DD-3a, the power receptacle does not contact bottom plate, is smaller, and is flat with the rear of the casing, Cannot be seen when reading the bottom label)
2. Serial number is inside the battery box, on a paper label, starts with an "8" or a "7" as its first digit (possibly a "6" but haven't seen a "6"). (NOT on the bottom, dot-matrix printed on a silver window on the blue foil label)
3. The colour of the pedal is a more pearlescent, sometimes little bit mellowed / yellowed out. Most of the MIJ DD-3As are the "whitest" looking DD-3s. There is definitely LESS pearlescent finish in the DD-3A's. The MIT DD-3's returned to a more pearlescent finish, but not as pearly as the original MIJ DD-3 and the DD-2.
The original DD-2 and MIJ DD-3 are identical inside. Boss "Service Notes" dated Feb 1986 says so, ie. "the only difference is the pedal" where DD-3 and direct out is printed. I no longer have an original DD-3 and I forgot to check if it said DD-3 on the circuit board instead of DD-2 on the etchings, the identifcation numbers printed in white on the PCB are the same.
Hope this helps folks, generally speaking a legit DD-3 can be bought for about $40-$50 less than a DD-2 on eBay these days. Same guts and sound.
Caution though - I have found that ALL boss digital delays sound different from the early 80's. you could get a dud with a bad delay loop that craps out after 30 seconds of repeats, so if you want to make spooky voiceovers with that infinite feedback (not using the hold mode) check em out before you buy if you can! |

Actually, the larger adapter jack type was used on the first run of DD-3A pedals too, so don't go by that alone if you're shopping for a first version DD-3. The safest way is still to open it up and have a look. Pics and descriptions of what to look for can be found here.
