If you have the Boss book, you maybe saw the "The Boss B-100 Acoustic Preamp"?

I just bought this: The Boss BPA-200 Acoustic Preamp, with 4 knobs instead of 3, with box (without plexi top) and manual.

The Boss book just said it was the first Roland product with Boss in the name. But the seller of the BPA-200 wrote a bit more information about the link with Boss:
quote:
This piece was called "The Boss" BPA200 by its creators Beckmen Musical Instruments. The amazing coincidence is, in 1978 Thomas Beckmen became half-owner (along with Roland Japan) of RolandUS. This meant that he now distributed Roland and "Boss" products, making "The Boss BPA200" an extraordinarily rare artifact in the peripheral history of Roland and Boss.

I couldn't find information about Beckmen Musical Instruments, except on this Japanese page (I think it's about the history of Roland):
http://www.jabira.net/enkaku/ro/roland.htm

Translation (with online translator):
quote:
April, 1978 It invests in sales companies Beckmen Musical Instruments Inc.in the United States and Roland Corporation U.S . Establishment.

Pictures: see auction:

I was surprised there were no other bidders...

That is very cool.
I was always puzzled by the Made in USA print on the B-100. I always thought it was made by Roland/Boss Japan but this explains the product.

Great price too considering that we're not likely to see another one popping up anytime soon.

Very cool indeed, I did almost buy that B-100 a while back, but I think it was going for more like $150

Also: Welcome to the forum DiscoFreq, I find the information on your website to be invaluable. And I think we're all very lucky to have such an excellent resource available to us.

Do you have a link/picture somewhere? I think I saw one a few years ago, but that was the only one.

Thanks :) I try to look here sometimes, but I'm not a very active forum user (often too busy ;)).

It's strange there's so little documentation about the Beckmen/Roland story, but it seems to be correct.

I was very surprised there were no other bidders, I only did a bid of $100 before I went to bed (a few hours before it ended), so 1 bid would have been enough to overbid me...

Hi DiscoFreq

What a great find.

And from what I could read of the manual it's written in
Old Time ChingElish or (Chinglish)

That's what the old engineers that I used to work with, called the Chinese to English translations, we used to see in most user manuals.

I have a small booklet from a Roland product, from the early 80's
It actually tries to tell you how to adjust the tension on some machine heads.

Well no matter how many times I have read this booklet, I can't make head nor tail, of what it's trying to say & tell me.

If you are interested? I will try to find it & post a pic.

The picture here was taken from an Ebay auctionabout 6 months ago. It could be the same one.

Is it ok if I use that one on my site? I just created a page for the B-100 on my site (with links to yours):

Are you sure? It was made in the US...
I didn't notice that, but that doesn't mean it's not Chinglish as English is only my 3rd language and not perfect either...

Of course in some old manuals it's terrible, check some of the descriptions on these pages:
http://filters.muziq.be/model/coron/first
http://filters.muziq.be/model/tronix

They came from brochures in English, I just copied them :)

Other examples of Chinglish on Dirk-Hendrik's page:

Sure, no problem. I think I have some more pics that I got from Bobby (who sold the item on Ebay). I'll zip them up and mail you a link.

Ok, thanks!

I'll send you some better pictures of the BPA-200 when I receive it.
