| With all the variations on overdrive and distortion Boss has made over the years, what do you guys prefer, and which pedal in those categories do you use the most? |

| This is one of the few that I go without a Boss on. The Keeley modded TS-9 is amazing. I sold all my other overdrives after i heard that thing. |

I had a BD-2 that I really learned to dislike the more I played it. Very thin, not much low end and flabby muddy tone. Looks cool though.
In my experience the OD-2 is the best Boss overdrive I've used. I like that one alot. |

here's a list of all boss dist and OD pedals i owned.
OD - OD2 OD2 mij OD2r SD1 SD1 mij SD2 BD2 OS2 ODB3
DIST - MT2 HM2 HM3 DS1 DS1 mij DS2 DS2 mij MZ2 mij FZ2 DF2 DF2 mij MD2 XT2
what's left is the MZ2 and DS1 mij. so, i guess that would be my answer. on the OD side, the SD1 mij was the best i've tried. i wanted to try out the OD1, OD3 and PW2 first before giving a vote for the OD department. :) |

overdrive vs. distortion really depends on the amp you're using, and how much distortion you want. if your amp can provide the distortion (e.g., a Marshall JCM 800), then an overdrive pedal (my all-time favorite = MIJ SD-1) on top of it may be all you need. on the other hand, if you're using an old single channel Fender Twin Reverb, then you probably need a distortion pedal (my favorite right now is a MIJ HM-2) to get a metallic distorted sound. and you can add an overdrive pedal as a gain boost for solos.
one warning is to never use a distortion pedal + overdrive pedal into the dirty channel of a solid-state amp; it's very easy to blow out the speakers, even with the amp turned up halfway. (trust me on this one.) |

For OD and Dist I'd vote for SD-2 and XT2

I like distortion for some stuff (MT-2, DS-1). While some OD's give me an added boost or different crunch (SD-1, BD-2, OD-2, and my secret weapon the Tube Works Real Tube OD (think Marshall JCM 900, or Peavey 5150 in a box)). it all in the eye (or ear) of the beholder. |

| I have to say the (quad opamp version) OD1 is my favorite overdrive. For distortion, I really like the MIJ DS1. For something in between, the BD2. |

OD-1 for me. There's something about it that the other overdrives don't have. |

I'd have to agree that the OD-1 offers more of what alot of people spend mucho $$$ in boutique pedals to get. Maybe one of the best Boss pedals to which the term "mojo" would apply. Give me a tele, an OD-1, a tube amp - and let's start cuttin' heads. ( 2nd "Crossroads" reference in a day! )

For me overdrives are a must, I like BD-2 (Stinkfoot modded) the most closely followed by OD-1 (or vice versa another day...). For distorsions I use them to make as much noice as possible, so cranked MT-2 or HM-3 are good choises. But I can live without distorsion-pedals, overdrives are a must. |

| That doesn't make sense, to say that you find it awesome and annoying at the same time. |

That mid hump is one of the main reasons I like the OD-1 so much |
