Dr Bob.....what do you think of the ce5 compared to the other boss chorus you have.... have you tried it in stereo.....?

little franzoni should be along any day now..the 25th was the projected date but the (other) doc reckons any day now....

good thread stahlhart...it's nice to see i'm not the only sad ol' 80's chorus buff here.....looks like there's a few of us out there still...don't know why it got such a bad rep over the last few years, like any effect if you over use it,it becomes boring.....

Hi FRANZONI
I love all my Chorus's, Boss or otherwise.
The Analog CE-5 has a great range of tonal control, and can be set to subtle or more in your face tone wise.
I can't comment on the newer digital version of the CE-5.
I still have not run the CE-5 in stereo, Franzoni, the valve amps are
heavy, & I'm no spring chicken anymore.

But I always seem to migrate back to my CE-2's,
The CE-3 in mono is so subtle that I sometime struggle to hear if it's on, it's really a Stereo pedal.

If you want to know my all time fav. chorus to date,
it's my Arion SCH-1
There is something about this pedal, & it's really hard to put my sonic or Tech finger on it, It just always sounds wonderful.
(sorry all you Boss die hards)
But the reissue, SCH-Z is very different & not in the same class.

Here is a Little secret setup, that I use, when I do an Acoustic only set or gig ( yes it's with a Boss CE-2 ), I think I have posted this up once before.

Set the CE-2 for Slow-5 to 9 o'clock and Deep-about 2 to 4 o'clock
I then plug in my Fender Acoustic Cutaway, with a Fishman classic 4T, then finger pick the set, it works for plectrum strumming as well, but much better on finger picking, it really fills out your solo set.

The real secret part, is to hide the CE-2 into a small plastic box, with just the in-out leads showing, Tell them it's a preamp for the Piezo pickup.

This simple setup, makes a phenomenal difference to a solo set,
but keep the whole chorus thing really subtle.
Perhaps even set the rate, to as slow as you can set it.

Remember, that the CE-2 will add a small but significant bump to the Mid range frequency response on the guitar.
Sort of like an enhancer.

Now there's something I just thought of but haven't tried,
just running an EH-2 enhancer in place of the CE-2 ???

Got to go try something out! ............
Regards Dr. Bob

Nice one doc....sounds like a great idea...i was hoping to do something similar with the ch1...i.e make a small board for the acoustic with a volume pedal,my ge7,one of my dd3's and the ch1 going into one of the stereo channels on the desk panning left and right....should be monster....i'm finding the ch1 a little too subtle for the electric these days,i'm looking for more of a 80's police/pretenders type of sound with the pedal able to do a leslie type sim as well...i've heard great things about both the ibanez, arion, analogman and i'm impressed with the red witch and retro-sonic sound clips i've heard....guess i'll just have to win the lotto............

Hi Franzoni
Your mini pedal board setup sounds like a good idea.
Of all the Boss chorus pedals, I don't own a CH-1, I saw one about a week ago at a local S/hand dealers, but passed it up.

It had the Left hand most knob, changed to an orange top one, they were asking about the right price for it, but I guess I wanted one that was still in original condition, and the CH-1 is not all that hard to find.

Have you found that most Stereo chorus pedals, are subtle in mono, & seem to really want to run into a stereo setup?

I have a Line 6 Space chorus, I did get it far too cheap; But I have been very disappointed with it in a mono setup; Even so, I elected to keep it, sometimes on a rainy day, you sometimes find that sweet spot on it, that everyone raves about.

It supposedly does a CE-2 emulation, but I'll be stuffed if I can find the setting, even going by the owners manual?

Keep me informed about your mini pedal board setup, & how it goes in a live gig, you seem to have just the right combination of effects on it.

If you find a faulty Arion SCH-1 - let me know, they are simple to fix. & well worth the effort. You'll find that it's mostly the 100K pots, that fail on the Arions, other than for Stupidity & reversed polarity plug packs, & clumsy fat guys-girls.

A lot of people retrofit the Arion's guts into a more robust diecast metal case.
Remember, just don't be fooled into getting the SCH-Z reissue.

funny you should say that dr. bob cause i've done the last few acoustic gigs with a CE-2 and an EH-2. just watch that the top end doesn't go overboard and you'll have a lovely rich acoustic set-up that'll work well with chords or picking!!

Hi ControlFreak
Great minds think alike..

What sort of settings were you using on the CE-2 & the EH-2?
Did you run the CE-2 into the EH-2 at the end of the chain.
Before the amp, or in the effects loop?

As I wrote earlier, the Fishman Classic preamp in my Fender Acoustic, just loves the CE-2, set to slow and deep.
I still haven't tried using the EH-2.
I had to do MAN STUFF around our new house.

Which pedal is adding the most top end?
