Not to take this too far off topic... Interestingly, fabrication of the older chips and trasistors is "easy" these days. We were routinely making 20 year old design FETs in the university lab 20 years ago (so they would be 40 year old designs now - perfect for pedals). It's almost doable by at the hobby level (by someone very determined, I'll grant you). My point is that if there was a demand for the old chips, they can be made. As they say, it aint rocket science.

good to know. after investigating the costs of chips to build some clones, seems like there could be a solid market for this. you may have found your calling laurie :)
the chips from the VB-2 are like $50-75 ea. and i've read places that the chips used in analog delays are almost extinct.

congrats on your CE-2 experience. i felt the same way when i got mine and i tend to do most of my clean playing with one on when i'm playing at home. the older silver screw ones are generally mild enough to where they'll stack with just about any other effect pretty well.

I was wondering if someone would pick up on that- great song, album After playing more w/ the CE-2 I'm more and more impressed. I've had a few chorus pedals, but this one is really special- grab one while they're still reasonably priced if you can, definitely worth every cent.

I used mine in rehearsal last night, and all i can say is wow........believe the hype.... i was wary as it's a mono pedal but the sound is amazing ,really warm and lush and fills out the guitar parts when kicked in,doesn't sit on the sound but becomes part of it.....everyone mentioned how filling it was and the little volume boost out of it doesn't hurt either on the clean stuff........the CH-1 while i think is still a great pedal is a much more milder chorus,i think i can see a little mini board for it with my GE-7 and a delay running into one of the stereo channels on the desk for my acoustic and mandolin.......but the CE-2 is on the board for the forseeable future.... big thank you to Dr Bob for advising me to go and check it out.....i drove 80K round trip for this one,but worth every minute.........BTW your right bro' the early dire straits stuff was great....in fact all the dire straits stuff was pretty good...have to say i like knopflers guitar playing..........

I agree about how it meshes w/ your sound- I had an Ibanez CS-9 that sounded good, but it was less natural/organic sounding than the CE-2 and sounded more like an effect. If you get the chance check out Knopfler's chorused tone on the song Lions- that to me is the epitome of what a good airy chorus should sound like. Probably a CE-1...

Bit of a strange turn of events..all of a sudden there is a load of ad's in the local buy and sell for boss pedals and there is a CE-2 for sale for 180 euro...black label, japan, seller reckons around '81... i know controlfreak lives in that part of the country...but i remember him telling me once he had got one i missed out on,but that was a good few years ago..... unless he's decided to sell.....still if i was in the business of selling(which i'm not...) that would be a good return in less than a week....i paid 115 and two of those were boss so in theory i paid 50 euro for a black label '83 CE-2....

hi there, don't want to sound smug but...

I came across my MIJ 1981 CE-2 about 6 months ago in a cash converters shop priced at £15

they also had a MIJ 1987 CS-3 for £15, I thought that I could maybe get them to throw in a spare guitar strap or something if I bought both, but never got the chance to haggle as they said they would let me have them both for twenty quid (good english pounds) the pair!!

both pedals are a bit bashed up on the outside but work ok, all though the CS-3 hasn't managed to displace the LM-2 on my pedal board yet the CE-2 seems much better than my CE-3 which is now keeping the compressor company on the shelf.

Welcome to the forum fireman.... you done very well with the price of the pedals..i'm really happy with getting a CE-2 for what i did,ok i had to take the HM-2 as well as part of the deal but that turned out to be a happy accident as it's not a bad pedal at all.... but you did real good getting the two of them for £20......the CS-3 is not a bad pedal...a few people here have modded them with monte allums kit and some of their own design(thanks lauries...)and reported back with good results....

I'm thinking of renaming this the CE-2 appreciation thread.

My MIJ transition CE-2 is now, officially, my favorite pedal (Boss or otherwise). Little bit of compression, little bit of "Brit Classic" amp from my POD, then into the CE-2 with a little bit of delay afterward and boy does it sound good. Nicest clean sound I've ever extracted from my Strat.

I love this pedal!!
