Just finished a couple of HZD special order pedals - completely hand wired. Don't try this at home! Way too much work.
A local musician wanted the HZD Boost effect "always on" and the foot-switch to be an A-B switch after the effect. No battery, but that's OK for this guy he'll just use his 9V daisychain.

Excuse the crappy perspective on this one... (the knobs really aren't that big!)

Nice one... i posted in the thread about the FA-1,about my experience at the weekend with my HZD on a gig..i had the opportunity to turn the Marshall up to halfway(remember i'm using EL84's with adapters with the marshall to bring it down to about 35/40 watts) and the HZD as a clean booster pusing the front end,it really is a wonderful effect to bring some sparkle to the sound and gave the marshall a nice edgy/close to dirt sound...reminded me a lot of SRV before he turned on his TS-9 or early Rory Gallagher... i can see why you got an order for the effect to be always on... ...is the A/B side of things to switch between amps...?...

| It would be cool if you installed a stereo switch jack on the extra output so when its not being used it routs the signal back to the normal output. In the always on mode this woudln't function well but if you made it a wet/dry then when you remove the second out put it will turn into an on/off. Just thinking aloud. it would be sweet if you could wire it to either be on/off. or A/B. |

Hi Laurie
Nice work. Neat idea.
I see you went with my grommet isolation idea, that we talked about when you came to visit us. (at least they look like grommets).
It's interesting to read what Franzoni did with the HZD Boost on the weekend. Slightly pushing the front end of his Marshall.
Regards Dr. Bob

Yep..it was the first chance i've had to really use it with the marshall in a setting where i could get the marshalls power amp section working to a healthy level of volume..up to recently i always used compressors as clean volume boosters but they tend to add something to the sound where the HZD seems to give it more sparkle and make the sound more dynamic or organic,i think of the HZD as a clean/treble booster more so than a line driver like the original FA-1 that it was based off...it's hard to put into words but i like what it does..... ... |

Nice work Laurie!
I'm just in the middle of making an FA-1 'copy' (a couple of small changes) for my boss at work, and I was interested to try different op-amps on the breadboard. I tried a 4558, 1458, 072 and 353. The 1458 and 4558 were pretty similar, the 1458 was a little more pronounced. The 072 was very clean but uninspiring, not as much character as the previous two. The 353 was my favourite in the end, with a bit more body to the mids. Not a transparent sound, but one with a bit of pluck.
I used a 2N5457 for the FET.
I like those leggy pots you've got there... very useful.

I would imagine yours will sound pretty sweet with your new gibson and your blackstar amp..... |
