Just picked up a Phase 90 for cheap. Date inside is 1987.

If you drive it with a hot signal it seems to distort pretty easily - just a light fluffy distrotion. Is this normal with the 80's Phase 90's?

They can be quite prone to distortion, yes. If you take out the feedback resistor (located right between two of the op-amps), it'll be better.

So I dismantled it and cleaned, lubricated and reassembled it then tried it with my blackface reissue and there is no hint of the distortion I heard when I tried it at the sellers place. Guess it must have been an idiosyncrasy with his rig.

Pretty nice unit all around... REALLY like the sound. More so than my 2007 version of the same thing. This one is from one of the first production runs after Dunlop took the whole thing over (1986 IIRC).

I bet by this time Laurie's wife and kids are going crazy from Laurie playing Van Halens "Ain't talking 'bout love" over and over again.
