This was just languishing away in my Dad's basement.

Boy they built stuff solid back in the fifties.

It's mono so I guess I need to build a guitar rig out of it... but there are no preamp controls, it's just a 40-Watt (?) amp.

First I'm going to cautiously warm it up before attaching any speakers.

Well I plugged it in and let it warm up -- the tubes were glowing a lovely shade of orange.
I guess I'll hook up this preamp, a source and a regular home audio speaker to see how it all sounds.

Then I'll try a Tele and some pedals, maybe hook it up to my gargantuan Kustom cabinet with three Jensen 15's.

I hope there are no impedance issues? Don't want to blow a tube. |

Ah, there is no sweeter place than an ancient back-basement. GREAT find! |

That is an amazing looking piece of kit, too bad it isn't stereo, a friend of mine built a very similar looking beast but in stereo for his hi fi, actually it looks just like two of yours, and it sounds amazing, I have never heard anything quite like it. I should imagine you could turn it into a very nice custom guitar amp though!

Looks like a beautiful piece of kit....i reckon it will make a monster guitar amp all you need is a preamp or even a graphic EQ if you wanted something in front of it to shape your sound..one thing for sure it will be a better built tube amp than some of the crap there making these days....

Yes, it really is a Pile 'O Tone !!
So I got the Scott preamp all warmed up and attached an output to the Pilotone's input, connected an 8-Ohm Infinity home audio speaker to the amp's 8-ohm terminals. It gives me the option of a 16-Ohm load also.
With a CD source attached to the tape input of the Scott, I powered everything up, and lo and behold; music came out of the speaker !!
Using a 1/4" to RCA adaptor, I plugged in a Strat and Maxon OD-808. What I eventually arrived at was really quite nice.
But that old Scott did not benefit from its basement hiatus. All the switches and pots are rather scratchy. It does have level controls for every input, at the rear of the chassis, so that's a bonus.
All in all I got my money's worth. The tube amp sounds very nice with some minor AC hum. The Scott preamp needs a going-over with some contact cleaner, but it is salvageable.
I'm going to start saving my pennies for a Sarno SMS Classic Preamp and run that into the Pile O' Tone with a regular speaker cabinet.
Will post some detail shots later. |
