A buddy sent me a couple of Boss CS's to repair & possibly mod, a CS-3 and a moderately beat-up old CS-2. For my trouble, I get to keep one.
Before he sent them, he told me "one doesn't work, and one kinda works". Based on that description, my troubleshooting commenced:
1) Unpack compressors 2) Turn compressors over 3) Read label on back: "Boss AC Adapter... ACA-120" 4) Problems solved.
I know this guy has a pedalboard with some nice boutique stompboxes on it. I'm betting he tried running them off his 9-volt supply with everything else. I scared up a couple of batteries, and sure enough they work fine. Things sound a little scatchy (but that may be the flakey jack on my Telecaster) so I'll clean the jacks for him, perhaps replace the footswitch in the CS-3, since it seems a little unpredictable.
He says he wants Wampler's mod on the CS-3, which is fairly easy, with a low part count. I'll do a PSA conversion on it, too.
And I get to keep the CS-2! |

First off, let me say THANK YOU to Laurie for the great tutorial - the switch-cleaning went off without a hitch and worked like a charm.
I spent two hours tonight pulling them apart, cleaning switches and jacks, and jumpering their voltage-dropping diode/resistor so they'll run on a PSA now. I cleaned them inside and out, got all the little corners clean, and pulled some major dust bunnies out from under the knobs on the CS-2.
The CS-2 is MIJ from 1982 and sounds great. I love it with the attack all the way down and the sutain all the way up.
The CS-3 dates to 1991. It's MIT, but has the DBX chip in it. I don't like it as much - it's too nice. Definitely higher-fi that the -2; when the CS-3's EQ is at 50%, it sounds about like the CS-2, so they're a LOT more treble available on the -3 if you want it.
Using them together was fun. With both set for full squash, they just begged me to play "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" on my Tele.
Since I have to order parts for the mods on the CS-3, I'll have them around for another week or so, so I can play more with the CS-2 and decide if I want to keep it. I'm not sure I want/need a compresor in my rig. |
