Well i've been searching for one at a good price for about a month now, and today i finally received the one i bidded for on ebay. Serial number 128300 (produced November 1981). It has a long dash and black screw and cost $71US (plus $20US postage) which i thought was alright.

I think it sounds sweet. I've never played a modern ds-1 so can't compare it to the taiwanese models. Anyways, im still in the honeymoon period with this pedal so won't comment on sound and quality until ive had it at least for a month. Just thought i'd share my story with you since it took me quite a while to aquire.

Can't go wrong with an old DS-1. Good price too.

thankyou wasn't sure if $91 US was a good price, but it equals $110 AUD which is about how much a brand new DS-1 costs in stores over here. And i know i would much rather have a nice vintage japanese pedal than a new taiwanese pedal if price is the same.

Hi cyberpunk409
congrats.
check out the 1994 DS-1 manual, in the manual downloads section of the forum.
It has a few sample settings in it,
that I don't think, are in the current user manuals.

Enjoy your Honeymoon,
just don't let your current partner, catch you at it, with your new loved one.

Regards Dr. Bob

well done enjoy it.... i was lucky found my '84 ds1 in the singers shed years ago lying on a shelf getting dusty i tried leaving it and my od2 off my 'board for a while but i missed them too much so there back on at present....i use mine as a crunch sound/slightly dirty lead or with my cs3 or od2 at the same time for lead....my settings are usually...tone at 9 o'clock....volume at 3 o'clock and distortion at 0.....

I received a June 83 DS-1 this morning - the exact same month and year as my birth. Paid AUD$64 shipped, but it was a pretty beat up. When I got it the tone pot was wobbling all over the place so I had to tighten that up. I don't want to rain on the parade but I was kinda disappointed with the tone. I was expecting it to pump out Nevermind tone but it was fizzy and thin. To dial out the fizziness I ended up running it with the DIST on 0, with did a nice gritty rhythm tone, but basically covered the same ground as my OD. It's already off to a new home.

hey man, the trick to the DS-1 is to keep the tone down on it!!

whoa!!!! $64 AUD shipped is insane! do you mind if i ask where/how you scored that? if it was an ebay auction could you maybe post the link? i'd love to see what condition it was in and why it went so cheap.

yeah, i too discovered that keeping the TONE knob down is the key to getting this pedal to sound great. I would have like a little less distortion with the DISTORTION knob at ZERO though. It seems as though there is not enough distortion variance with the DIST knob at MIN or MAX. Other than that, it's a great pedal

I read somewhere that someone thought this pedal produced a drop in overrall volume when kicked in, even with the LEVEL knob maxed out. what the...? anyone else have this problem? i find that it boosts the signal quite nicely.

Yeah ebay. It wasn't labelled a MIJ in the title (or even DS-1) and the seller only added that it was Japanese to the description as an afterthought. Here's the item number: 180103992065 He didn't really make an effort to sell, hence why it went below value. I got $100 BIN for it within 2 hours, though admittedly by milking the whole Jap DS-1 is better thing.

i find that it's a great pedal at bedroom volume but a pain in the ass if you're playing at a small club sized venue where the amps aren't run thru a p.a.

if the level on the amp is, say, 8 the the dist at full level will prob kick in at level 7.

it seems to have a certain output volume that it won't really go beyond.

i run my amps clean and kick in the ds1 or my od2,i think i understand what controlfreak is saying as in relation to other gain padels the boss ones are probably a bit quieter but i find i get enough boost out of them and if your using both together or one of them and the compressor its not a problem for me.....but i usually have the volume on both pedals maxxed out or near to it......
