What is a good pedal for the guns sound? I currently am using a metal zone & cannot get it right. I am looking at a ds-1 keeley mod as i heard some demos and those sound good. Any suggestions?
What i use:
Fender Blues Deville 4x10
Les Paul Jr. SG Standard |

Hello and welcome to the forum... as far as i know slash didn't use a distortion pedal but cranked his marshall up and used a graphic eq pedal in a reverse 'V' shape...i.e... boost the midrange for solos..i'm not sure if izzy used a pedal for his sound but i suspect not... if keeley boosts the midrange freq on his DS-1 mod it might get you there but i reckon for the rythmn sounds maybe an overdrive might be more 'marshally' sounding than a distortion....i know a lot of people here swear by the SD-1 and 2 and i used a OD-2 for many years which i still have in the guitar case i case of a problem at a gig....... |

| On stage he used a MXR 10-band or Boss GE-7 for lead boost & feedback enhancement. His Wah pedal is the Dunlop DCR-ISR Crybaby rackmount wah system. He also uses a Heil Talkbox, & Boss DD-3 Digital Delay. For clean processing he used a DBX compressor & Yamaha SPX 900. He favored the Nady 950-GT Wireless System. All signals went through the Bob Bradshaw Custom Splitter System. |

how bout some of the other metal pedals like the HM-2 and HM-3 or even the power driver? they are all supposed to emulate a marshally stack.
other than that i think the DS-1 comes close with all knobs at midnight. |

How about that Dunlop Slash wah that's got a distortion in it?
Les Paul ---> Slash Wah ---> Marshall Amp
If that doesn't sound like Slash, then you'll need to work on the technique! |

That dist in the wah doesn't come anywhere close to an overdriven Marshall. I'd say, until you can afford a decent tube amp (not neceserilly a Marshall, any good tube amp will do) with a 4x12 cab, you'll need a pedal that emulates that sound. The MT-2 is way too high gained for that type of sound, you'll probably be better off with an SD-2 or similar lower gain type distortion pedal, perhaps with a additional EQ pedal for tone shaping after it.
On a sidebar, some other important things to take into consideration, Slash uses a fairly heavy set of strings, Ernie balls .11-.48 for a bluesier, heavier tone and Dunlop tortex 1.14mm purple picks. He also uses Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 pro pickups on both neck and bridge positions, this is also key to coming close to that sound.
In the end, it's all in your fingers to nailing that sound
Oh, btw, Izzy used a Marshall jcm800 2203 prior to Appetite for Destruction, he probably switched to a Boogie mark 2 during recording, since there's a pic of it on the album's back, you can also see Boogie 4x12 cabs in the Paradise City video, in the Sweet Child video he uses the Jcm 800 halfstack again though. |

Thanks for the replys everyone. I appreciate all the responses. Actually Izzy is my favorite guitarist and wish i could afford a mesa boogie mark 2. I will look into the sd-1 or 2 since those were reccomended.
Thanks again. |

His tone is easy to get fooled by. Many people try to use a lot of gain but it's quite the opposite. I have had my tone compared to his until people see my guitar settings, although after some research, I found that he does use some unusual settings.
First. For solos roll back the tone knob on your guitar atleast halfway. I know people will disagree but it's true.
Second. If you're going to mimick his sound with a pedal, roll back the tone or treble. I set mine to zero, also set the gain on the pedal below halfway.
Third. Use the Mid control on the amp to bring out "highs" and harmonics. Think of it as the treble knob.
Try the Marshall Gov'nor distortion pedal. It works well with tube amps.
I'm sure I'll think of more later.

this is all great info here!
i love hearing how great guitarists get their tone and the tips and tricks they use to get it. i find it gives great inspiration or show how's things can be done differently.
has anybody got any other tricks or ideas on how to get a persons tone with some boss pedals? |

an HM-3 is a bit too thin and too fuzzy.
the HM-2 is a bit too mid-scooped and is a bit too high gain but its tone is much closer in color than the hm-3.
waiting on my first PW-2 i've ever owned to arrive so i have no comment there...

this may be a little tricky as your guitars do not have a maple top, so some of the tone roll back tricks DarrinPA brought up may not work as well (although i believe he is very correct on the settings as the marshall jubilee is a very bright amp and that would explain slash's tone). the p-90 in the les paul jr may make up for that but might be a bit thinner (i haven't played enough p-90's unfortunately).
i see two options to experiment with. using a warm, mid-boosting overdrive to nudge your amp's gain over the top (this may only work at high volumes). using a brighter distortion and cutting the treble.
an od-3 perhaps for the overdrive? i can't think of any distortions that pop out at me except for possibly the HM-2 or a well-tweaked OS-2?

from my experiences, pedals can only take you so far in terms of authenticity. finding the right pedals generally requires evaluating a few things. the keys i look for: 1. guitar a. body and fretboard material b. type of pickups: buckers vs. single coil c. types of magnets used in the pickups: alnico ii, alnico v, ceramic, etc. d. body details: carved top, hollow, semi-hollow, solid, etc. 2. amp a. tube vs. solid state b. tube pre-amp vs. solid state pre-amp c. speaker dimensions/type/wattage
how close you can match up on those things will determine which pedals are required to try to dupe a sound as you may have to compensate for a factor that mis-matches. |

MI Audio Crunchbox may be the closest you can get to that sound in a pedal- coupled w/ a Les Paul of course |

| The best pedal for the Slash sound that I've heard would have to be the Option 5 Destination Overdrive. Very Marshally. |
