Found me a nice 4x12 Marshall cab on ebay for 170 euros
The cab is loaded with 4 rola celestion g12-80 15ohm speakers

2 speakers date '78 and 2 date '79 , How vintage is that
Are any of you guys familiar with these speakers or marshall cabs ? |

Congrats....... ..i'm not familiar with this exact model but i have a couple of 25 watt greenbacks in a 2x12 from around the same era..i like my greenbacks a lot..was the cab a 70's marshall as well..? if it was you got a real bargain, there the original plywood construction and tough as old boots...enjoy.....

Thanx guys. I think it's all original no extra solder on the speakers, from the outside the cab looks like one they still sell but the speaker input jack is a little one, not the usual speaker cup I had in previous marshall cabs I owned. How can I tell if the speakers are okay ? They sound good no strange noises

If anyone knows the type of cabinet this is please tell me.
Nice greenbacks FRANZONI

I did a little poking around and it seems the higher-wattage speakers mean it's a bass cab.. The likely model is 1982A or 1984A. Look a little further into that and you might find something concrete.. a lot of those cabs seemed to come with 65w or 100w speakers - yours seems like a less common variant. But I could be wrong!
Good luck in your quest for answers! |

Congrats, Marshall 4x12's are always a good choice, it's definetely the looks of Rock N Roll Those 12-80 speakers are also used in the 50 watt split channel combo I have, although I replaced it with a nice vintage 30.
My guess is that it's a 80 watt version of their standard speaker, designed for use in a open back cabinet/combo, but if they sound good in your cabinet, what the heck.
Your cabinet looks like a JCM800 era version of their 1960A cab, but with the little "JCM800 1960 model" logo missing. |

I think Dirk could be right with the era of the cab the grillcloth can be helpful to trying to date some of this stuff......still a class piece of kit and a great bargain at 170...... ...my 2x12 had a closed back but i cut a big oval shaped hole in it to let some of the sound out...i read somewhere(ithink it was a interview with Albert Lee) that Clapton also started doing this during the 70's.....always an option if your not mad abut the closed back sound...just get another piece of plywood cut it to the same size and keep the original back panel intact...... ..... |

Here's some info I found on the net:
"The Marshall model 1982 4x12 cabs that were rated at 320 watts contained four Rola-Celestion G12-80's (80x4=320) according to The History of Marshall book, these cab were made for only two years, 1981 and 1982."

Hmmmm FRANZONI, no holes.......yet, maybe later when I have the time to experiment. |

| another cool trick is to only leave two or three speakers in the cab. |
