Me and Sunburst have had a e-mail conversation about prices and supply of parts for older Boss-pedals, knobs, thumbscrews, bottomplate screws and other things.
Does anyone know if there is a market just like parts for old Fenders, pricewise?
Anyone seen prices for knobs Type I with screw?
If its not here now Im sure it will come, as more than one of us has bought pedals with some part missing.

I think there's a lot of people looking for spare parts for Boss pedals. Roland can of course supply some parts like thumb screws or springs but a lot of parts have been discontinued so there's definitely a market.

I haven't dared buy any of the knobs on EBay. I know there are different sizes of these and the pedal would look redicilous if a knob size weren't spot on.

You`re right there Bossarea, a picture of a knob or screw isn`t enough, it`s the small details that counts.
If I was missing a knob for a DM-3 I would easily pay $10 or more for one, but that would show on a picture if it was the right one. DS-1, SG-1 and lots of others wouldn`t.

anybody knows the size of the bottom plate screws, to be able to buy them from a local hardware store?

Any info would be appreciated...

My friend also needs a know for his DF-2 (Distortion and Feedbacker) ... any suggestions? Will an HM-2 know work?

You mean "Anybody knobs the size...?"

Sorry about that. Yes, the DF-2 knobs are identical to the HM-2 knobs.
There's some info about the bottom plate screws here:

The black brushed-insert knobs on the older Boss pedals are actually a standard part and are fairly easy to get. I think that Radio Shack even sold them at one point. The narrower knob for the older 3-knob pedals is more difficult to find -- I don't think that I've ever run across a replacement.

In the UK Maplin sell a knob with a set screw which is almost identical to the Type I knob. I bought a couple and the only major difference I can see is the moulding on the underside of the knob is slightly different. Here's the link: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=1819&doy=17m2
the knob to go for is the first one "Knob K7A" code YX01B

You'll find that the available replacement knobs are close, but not exact. The ones Studio1525 sells on ebay look right, but they are not the same height or diameter at the skirt.

Grace and peace,

Most dead pedals are pawned off or just thrown away. I try to pop into pawn shops that DO NOT specialize in musical instruments cause say someone has an intermitten battery clip, they bring the pedal in , get their $30.00 and once the shopkeeper puts it on the shelf, the next guy buys it and in a week it dies.

So it comes back to the shop and it gets thrown out.

I ask at the buying desks all the time for old pedals and SOMETIMES you might get lucky and get a pedal hull or something.

Also, nobody really knows what to do with a broken pedal cause any electronic shop will charge $50 just to look at it., so right there, its easier just to shop eBay.

The frustrating thing in all this, is it is difficult to keep an older pedal all orginal, and, especially to keep the i/o jacks (which are plastic) from smashing inside, which is a pretty common failure in otherwise indestructible boss pedals.

I have left my name and phone number at various music stores and pawnshops that I'd take dead pedals off their hands, but no calls.

dunno what else one can do...

another strategy is just buying "beatup" versions of pedals you love and hopefully can get them cheap and just hang on to them for parts as you need them.

i have seen "beatup" CE-3s go for $10 - $15.00 and those balck input/output jacks are $5.00 each, and the pedal as 3 of them, so right there you get your money back - you also get a nice bottom plate and possible some good pots.

and in 20 years, some way cool dude will be using a CE-3 for a certain sound and you'll remember all the CE-3s you trashed skinning them for pots and jacks!!!!

Some of the boss MICRO RACK series units go cheap, and they are loaded with pots and jacks that are likely the same as the 80's made pedals, the case screws may also be the same as those used on the pedals so this may be the only way once can build up an arsenal of hardware.

The working circuit boards can also always be kept or sold to someone else later too.

Finally, the boxes are good for experimentors.

Spare parts is a bit of pain yes....but what can anyone do. I suppose some could post pictures of old scrwes and knobs that might be of some use?&^%!?

I am bothered by the comment that 'after a week it dies'. Boss is the one of the few companies which it is worth it to buy used.

BTW does anyone have any sliders for a GE-7?

"after a week it dies" refers to a boss pedal that no-one knew how to properly fix or did not know that the pedal had an intermittent powerproblem or a broken guitar input jack. These are EASY 5 minute fixes IF YOU HAVE THE PARTS!!!. What I meant above simply was that sometimes pedals that are marginal get traded in or pawned for cash, and then they are brought back to the store as defects and then the storeowner just throws them out. Sad but true. For a business owner it's called cutting your losses. For a collector or hobbyist, darned shame .
