what would cause a dim LED on a CS-3 , my dvom says it has 2.43 volts when lit , i installed a 3 mm super brite LED. but still it is very dim , tryed a different LED ,and same problem .
what resistor controls the LED voltage , sorry i can't find a good schematic around.
thanks to the forum. |

R35 controls the LED current.
There is also a z-diode (D9) in series that might be the problem.

removed D9 diode and jumperd it and the LED is now BRIGHT !! but i don't have a zener diode on hand , will any other diode work or no ?
thanks for your help . |

According to the schematic, it needs to be a 5.6V zener diode. They are quite cheap so the best thing is to get a proper replacement.
Regular Si diodes will have a different behavior and probably not work. |

will it damage anything to run it with the jumper wire ?
thanks |

Can't seem to find a schem that gives the value of R35. What value is it?
If R35 is anything above 1k, it should be fine. I've always felt that Boss' approach of putting a zener in this part of the circuit was a bit "belt and braces". |

| R35 = 3.3K and it checks out good . |

| Yeah... you should be OK to leave D9 jumpered. Worst case is something puts a reverse voltage spike on the LED and kills it. |

Hi hot tubes & Guys
I'm not 100% sure if missed something here.
But is your CS-3 an earlier one that uses the ACA unregulated 12VDC adapter? I have one that is ACA, & another that is PSA 9VDC Regulated modern type.
Is/was the LED still dim if you used a known good 9V battery?
My ACA has the DIM LED when used with a PSA. I just did the ACA to PSA resistor mod to mine.
Hope this helps?
Regards Dr. Bob |

Good point Dr Bob.
I remember I had to remove D10 and R32 and short them in order to use a PSA adapter. |

Hi hot tubes
Nice to hear you have it all up and running again.
Which CS-3 schematic are you working from, or referencing?
Or do you possibly have the actual CS-3 Service notes?
Regards Dr. Bob |

| While we're on the topic. I just did an outdoor Friday and the stock leds were useless. Apart from putting clear brights in, how can I find the the proper R location for each of my pedals so I can change to value for brighter,,,it's not the same location for all pedals is it (R35)? I have a lot of outdoor gigs this summer and I need the leds to be able to compete with the sun. |
