Has anybody ever hand wound a guitar pickup? I have any idea I want to try, basically splitting a single coil into 2 seperate pickups -almost like a p-bass pickup, but I can't find any info about rewinding a pickup. I'm just looking any info, not just specifically the mod I want to do. The idea I'm going for is almost like the G&L single coils pickups I think.
Don't worry, I'm going to attempt this on a $12 squire pickup. |

I have never done it, but read some about it... Firstly you got to have something that rotate the bobbin, you cant wind it by hand without a lot of "pain". Thats something you can build yourself of course. But to just rewind one pickup, thats a lot of work... On the other hand I have the impression that wind pickups are not that difficult, just a little carefullness. The wire is expensive as you have to buy a lot. I think that Stewart McDonalds have material, search the net and find out, or to find other suppliers. Ita important to also search the net for how to do it, or buy a book. There is information to find for sure.
And, if you do it, let us know, and good luck

| I'll have to do some research on it. there is a book about making pick ups almost a bible for it. can be quite expensive book to buy.I have repaired a few pickups but i have never totally rewound one.It is not totally hard it is more of an art then science. with how many winds you need to do. magnets and there strength and type and how long you need to pot then. It is really just trial and error |

I don't plan on starting from scratch. I'm going to take apart a squire telecaster pickup. I figure I can unwind it and use half the wire on each of the half of the pickup... or am I in over my head here?
I'm not too concerned about how great it sounds. I just want to try something new. But I do want it to actually work and not completly ruin it.
EDIT I just looked this up at Stewmac.com [thanks for the suggested site] and to do this by hand would take along time. So MANY turns are required... maybe I'll think of something else to do. |
