New Cables Day! Not exactly worthy of recognition by presidential proclamation, but somewhat momentous for me.
It occurred to me a while back that most of my guitar cables were 25 years old. The old 25-foot Whirlwinds were getting kinda noisy - they'd crackle when I stepped on them.
Not willing to pay for all the extra marketing hoo-ha included in modern high-end cables, I decided to build my own. I used ProCo's better-quality 90% spiral-shield cable, and Neutrik connectors, one straight, one right angle. I offered to build some cables for a buddy, too, so I could get the 100-foot price without having leftover.
So now I have some nice new cables, two 10-footers and two 15-footers. I don't need the long 25-footers any more, and I think I get more tonal benefits from simply using shorter lengths than by spending money on high-tech super-whizbang cable. The ProCo cable is nice - it's fairly fat, and seems to be heavy-duty, but it's also very soft and flexible. Me likey. Neutrik connectors are the new standard - their strain-relief assembly is great.
I'm a happy boy: I have me a nice new set of guitar cords.
And the old Whirlwinds? I cut one of them in half, added a couple of right-angle Switchcraft plugs, and gave them to my son. They're perfect for when he practices in his bedroom on his Jazz Bass. |
