can we get a final ruling on MIT vs MIJ sound quality. Has anyone oscilloscoped a CE-2 MIJ SS/Blackback, with a CE-2 MIJ BS/Greenback, and or a MIT BS/greenback?
Same with DS-1? (other threads have probably dealt nicely with the DS-1 circuits)
What about the BF-2 and the PH-2 that likely had no modifactions moving from MIJ to MIT.
ANY TAKERS on this "quick to debunk and devalue" all those made in Japan pedals!!!
AND FINALLY, can we come up with a DEFINITIVE list of HQ BOSS pedals that will never be duplicated in Taiwan or anywhere else???

i have in the past done a b tests of my own and have found exclusively that the mit/j pedals ive tested always indicate the mij as superior. these were not laboratory lab tests, but they were controlled. an oscilloscope test i feel is not going to help you here. As previously mentioned, pedals built on the same day will sound different and will look different on an oscilloscope. Also, people have their own version of what 'better' is. In a blind test i reckon most people couldnt tell the mit from the mij, but i feel that they could tell there was some kind of difference, unless that person is non musical or perhaps deaf. I do only speak for myself and suggest that its a waste of time for most people to even worry about any perceived differences. In fact, this mit mij thing can go too far...look on ebay..some of the questions are "is this item mij?"..the last time i saw this was for an od1 pedal. I have never seen an od1 pedal mit.

anyway, my opinion. svengali |

My own opinion is that in some cases the MIJ sound slightly better, the reason for this could be better components but Im not sure. Another theory is that the electronics has aged in a good way. DS-1 made a change of construction circa 1994, so theres the reason obvious. I have tested an early 1994 MIT DS-1 (with the same electronics) against a MIJ one and did not hear any difference at all. Inside both looked exactly the same so I was not surprised. All in all I think most of the MIJ/MIT debate is bullshit, thinking of the pre-CBS debate of Fenders. There was many good guitars build the years after the CBS took over, and probably quite a number of pre-CBS guitars that was inferior to for example some 1966 guitars. But that doesnt matter, the pre-CBS are always more expensive. And we have the same situation with MIJ (pre-CBS) and MIT (CBS). Someday Boss will move manufacturing of pedals to China, then we have post-CBS-pedals. And people will talk of how good the MIT was But of course there is a certain "mojo" to MIJ pedals or pre-CBS Fenders, and thats feeling-wise important to me.

EVERY pedal sounds different regardless of its origin? 2 MIJ's may differ in sound. i think the only reason that MIJ and MIT sound different is because people directly compare them. try comparing 2 MIJ's and see how they differ at the same setting. |

Good observations for a well-beaten subject. Me personally, I have found that the same model pedal will sound slightly different, due to age, place of manufacture etc.; some of the newer MIT pedals have a cheaper finish (looks to be thinner or easier to chip) and the black control label plates look a little cheaper - the earlier MIJ pedals feel a little better when setting them up and using the switch. Sound wise, one would think that newer manufacturing processes would make an electrically superior product.
One big thing I did notice is with the Digital Delays - the early DD-2s and DD-3 obviously have lower sampling rates than the DD-6, but I truly do find the DD-2 (in particular) has a way nicer sound than a DD-6 - but of course the DD-6 is PACKED with features.
The problem with collecting and or trying to find out if a particular Phaser is good or not, is that you may end up going through 3 to 5 used pedals to find one that has the right MOJO. I lucked out on a CE-2 from a pawnshop for $40 that sounds stellar; but never have had that luck on any other pedal (been through at least 5 dd-2s).
Anyways, due to varying production components, production cycles, looks like the best thing to do, is keep trying em till you find the MOJO you are looking for. |
