I've heard the experiences people have had with TU-2's sucking tone, and I've spent 100's of hours mucking about with gain structure and with impedance "matching". And it has occured to me that there are situations where ANY buffered pedal will suck the life out of your tone.
There are some pedals that, by their very nature, require a guitar pickup to be connected directly to the input. One classic example is the "Fuzz Face". There is an excellent article about how it works here: http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/fuzzface/fffram.htm
The techno-stuff in the article can be boiled down to this: "for the Fuzz Face to give you the right tone, the guitar pickup must be connected directly to the input of the effect". This is because the resistance/inductance/capacitance (the "RLC") of the pickup interacting directly with the input transistor is where at least half of the tone comes from.
Now, imagine you put a buffered pedal (like maybe a TU-2) between the guitar and the Fuzz Face. In this case, what is interacting with the input transistor of the Fuzz Face is the output buffer of the preceeding pedal - and an electronic buffer has very different properties to the RLC of the guitar pickup. And your tone evaporates.
In this case, if you used an (unbuffered!) A-B pedal to switch between the TU-2 and the Fuzz Face your tone would be preserved.

Or, an even easier solution. Put the tuner AFTER the fuzz. |
