We had a little mini-discussion going http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21&whichpage=4 on what is better (I'm more likely to say different) about the BF-2, BF-3, and the HF-2. I'm not a big fan of the digital concept, but some people were saying that they favor the BF-3 over the BF-2. The moderator was saying that he favors the HF-2 over both.
One of my thoughts was that the BF-3 probably has lower noise and better high-frequency response than the BF-2 because it is digital. I opened up my MIJ BF-2 and found three JRC4558D op amps and a TL022M op amp, none of which are very good (the TL022 is a really old and bad op amp). I was thinking it would be possible to swap out the JRC4558Ds with another op amp, the LM833N, which is low-noise and high-fidelity. The TL022M should be swapped out as well, but I'm not certain of a good replacement for it yet (I've found some things but haven't tried anything yet).
Someone once told me that he heard that replacing the JRC4558D (I don't know how many of them are in there) with an LM833N in the CE-2 makes it sound more like a TC Electronics chorus. I don't know if that is necessarily an improvement, but it is something to think about.
Thoughts? |

| Wow, nobody has any thoughts. I guess I will try to modify the pedals and make some recordings, then get back to you. |

| I think that the JRC4558d chips distort the sound just enough in the BF-2 to give it "that" sound. Kind of like in the old ADA flanger. The opamp you mentioned may be higher fidelity but it might also take something away from the sound of the BF-2. Just a thought. |

| LM833Ns distort nicely, too. At least if we are talking about overdrives (e.g. TS 9 parts substitutions). You might be talking about something else. |

Incidentally I did just try swapping the JRC 4558D with the LM833N in my Ibanez TS 9 Tube Screamer and really comparing the two for the first time (I think that I have done this before on a TS 5 but in my opinion the two sound like completely different pedals). The LM833N had more distortion, probably because it was letting more of the upper harmonic through. I used to think that the JRC 4558D had a really glassy tone, but really it just sounded browner and duller. I'm sure that if I wanted both sounds I could probably use the LM833N and turn the tone knob down (although I NEVER turned the tone knob down with the JRC 4558D in there). I should point out that my tube amp is not necessarily together right now and I am just running it through a solid-state mini-PA with no tone controls on that particular channel, so it may sound differently once I plug into a tube amp. |

| Back to the matter at hand I installed IC sockets in my CE-2 and BF-2 so that I could do a comparison, but don't really have the time to make the recordsings, plus I have to find a place where I could post stuff. I will get back to you all when I've got those things figured out. |

| Back to my TS 9, apparently I must have knocked the tone pot around, because I did the test today for my roommate and they sounded more similar than I had thought. The only big difference was the LM833N was a lot quieter! |
