Does anyone have one of these? I played around with one yesterday & it was damned impressive. Nice strings, vocal, & horn voices. If you want to turn your guitar into any other instrument, it does a realistic job. I'm wondering what other products I might consider that does the same thing? |

Roland have been making guitar synths for years...i think the one your looking at is a lower spec more affordable model they have brought out..i played one of the older ones when i got up to jam on my holidays a couple of years ago ...they are great fun ,i believe that some of the older ones have a problem of a small time delay between the note and the sound out of the amp.... pat metheny still uses the original early 80's one where you needed the special guitar for sax sounds..... |

Hi Defrag & Franzoni
Dr. Bob has a Roland GR-300 floor synth & the G-808 Guitar-Controller. from around 1980-81 and I am proud to admit that it looks like the day I purchased it.
pre MIDI by about 1 year & 1 Generation of Roland Guitar Synth.
The G-808 is a absolutely stunning guitar to look at & play, with top notch specs & custom Humbucker P/Ups.
It's pretty much an all Analog Synth & controller.
Do I GAS out for something newer & more modern, Yes, I know that mine will always be a classic.

I'd buy it if I could use just my guitar input then put my death metal in the mix so I could have a Distorted Violin |

Hi FRANZONI & Guys
Thanks for your kind words Franzoni. Here are a few links that will do a much better job, of describing the GR-300 & my G-808 guitar/controller.
The G-808 has a (7) lamination (alternate grain) through neck with the 8th being the Jet black ebony slab, for the fingerboard. :-)
http://www.joness.com/gr300/GR-300.htm Yes mine looks this good - maybe even better. There are lots of links off this page. ..... http://www.joness.com/gr300/ http://www.joness.com/gr300/patent.htm http://www.joness.com/gr300/manuals.htm http://www.joness.com/gr300/Gtr-Elec.htm http://www.hillmanweb.com/guitsyn.html http://cgi.ebay.es/Roland-GR300-Polyphonic-Guitar-Synthesizer-G808-Guitar_W0QQitemZ250184192526QQihZ015QQcategoryZ1288QQcmdZViewItem

I hope this helps Franzoni I still drool over the gear, as I said if you look at the 1980's ad, top of the page in the first link. The G-808 is a thing of beauty to behold, & it plays just as well. I still have the original frets on mine, But I did have them leveled 3 times when I first purchased it, as it has Jumbos on it & I prefer the smaller vintage traditional frets.
The darker wood is real slabs of the most beautifully figured Walnut. And the lighter wood is Silver Ash.
On this URl they say that, the lighter wood is Maple, but the my manuals say Silver Ash and the say the darker wood is Mahogany, manuals say Walnut. I have worked with walnut, & it's definitely walnut.
This guitar is very heavy about the wight of 2.5-3 vintage Strats. And sustains for a very long time.
Feel free to ask any question you may have.
Regards Dr. Bob |

I watched the demo's ( great site BTW) and it sounds sweet..... ......one of my favs was on the first clip he gets a sound more like a trumpet..it sounded like miles davis off the 'siesta' soundtrack..... the metheny sounds are pretty much spot on ...all you need is to add genius.. and a shed full of jazz guitar licks......really is a great package with the guitar...... your a very lucky man Doc.......
P.S.... the weight of the guitar wouldn't bother me as i have the yamaha SG2000S and these are heavier than les pauls..... |

Hi Franzoni Thanks for you lucky guy comment. Just remember, I traded my 64 Strat in, as the deposit on the GR300 & G-808 back in 81. Did I just hear you all sigh? Well no-one would have guessed back then, what the future value of a 64 Strat would be in today's $$.
And I did end up with a nice bit of gear, that is now starting to now appreciate in collectability - reputation & value, not to mention 26 years or more of broken in Tone, in those lovely timbers, in the entire guitar.
I don't know the weight of your SG2000S, but you can look up the weight of the G-808 on the links I posted. It's bloody heavy, but full of tone & sustain.

Thought you might like to see the SG2000S Dr Bob..it also has an ebony fingerboard which is supposed to be very good for tracking with synths......

Hi DeFrag I'm not familiar with the PDS-10, or my reference to it got lost in all the grey matter..

Hi Franzoni VERY VERY nice Thanks for the comments about my GR-300 & the G-808. I guess I was lucky, in some ways, I bought it new back in 80-81, it was the right setup for the direction I was taking back then. I also own a Suzuki XG-1m MIDI Controller.
I have been Gassing for a more current setup, as my Suzuki XG-1m MIDI Guitar Controller's fretboard, failed after owning it for a few years. I have been procrastinating over different methods to repair it.
The Susuki controller is one of the fastest MIDI guitar controllers I have ever played. As I said I still have it, it is relatively unheard of controller, only 30 demo units were brought into Australia.
Franzoni I reckon if you fitted a GK-3 pickup to your SG2000S & maybe got a GR-20 or something similar, the SG2000S would make an excellent Controller.
Regards Dr. Bob

Thanks Doc.....yep i was playing with the idea of putting one of those pickups onto one of my guitars....whats the story with the GK-3 pickup,if i got one could i plug it into a keyboard and use the synth sounds from it instead of a floor based unit....??....if i saw a similar setup of your roland gear for the right price i would go for it but as an alternitive can you control a keyboard like a korg M1 etc with the GK-3...?? as i can get a lend of a keyboard for messing around with in the house or even a couple of sound modules for synths... |
